I like Garrett just the way he is. When he has an American accent, he sounds confident and capable, if not quite a bit Arrogant. With a British accent, I would be afraid of him sounding snooty or snobbish, and without projecting the capability factor.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think Brits are weak or anything. But when I imagine a British Garrett, a smart assed thief that really doesn't like to fight but will make snide comments behind your back, I just can't help but picture Hugh Grant in a cloak.
And that image chills me to the very core...
i said slightly, but mostly muffled, though i wouldnt describe his accent in the game all that american, but more worldly and weary, on second thoughts he is better without the english accent. and anyway what brits do you know that would make comments behind your back, dont forget the brits have some of the toughest men in the world, the british SAS are the best elite force in the world, they actually train navy seals and delta force for the americans, making garrett not american doesnt make him weak or backstabbing, HUGH GRANT DOESNT REPRESENT US!!!!!!!!
if his accent was too american like tobey's would be then the movie would bomb everywhere except america, the way it is at the moment its fine in the game

Here's a serious suggestion -- it just occurred to me today: How about Ralph Fiennes? He has the perfect facial structure and he could more than handle the part. Even his voice - while not anything like Garrett's - I think would work very, very well in a film version of Thief. :)
Some other ideas for other characters:
Lord Constantine - Anthony Hopkins
Viktoria - Famke Janssen
And later...
Gorman Truart - Gary Oldman?
I dunno, I think they'd be perfect for the parts. :)
Oh, and I don't think young Garrett should be a celebrity actor. Wouldn't make sense, really, to use one so briefly. But on top of that, I think the transition from - and may the future actor forgive my words - a nobody to a somebody would be in greater affect if an unknown actor were to play the part.

You misunderstand me. An American making snide comments just sounds like a smart ass. A Brit making snide comments just sounds like (What's the phrase... Oh, yeah) a "Nancy-boy."
I know the SAS are tough. I trained with some of them over here in the states during my time in the police academy. Tough as the Navy SEALS, and crazy as a Marine.
I know Hugh Grant does not represent you. But, when I think of Garrett making his comments and jokes in a British accent, all I can see and hear is Hugh Grant. And like I said, it chills me to the core.
I do have to differ, though, and say that Mr Russell definatly gave Garrett the American sounding accent.
Edit: Who cares if it isn't a hit anywhere but the US? Isn't that all that matters? :D

There's no way Tobey would do ANOTHER superhero movie. Here's my wishlist:
Edward Norton - Garrett
Philip Seymour Hoffman - The evil cult leader intent on converting the city to his sadistic will
Courtney Cox - The corrupt but charming police lieutenant who plays a dangerous game by breaking the law to join Garret but can Garret completely trust her?
Salma Hayek - Viktoria - not a love interest - a shady ally. Mysterious and mythological, the only force that will stand against the church.
Morgan Freeman - The keeper who raised Garrett. Constantly watching, rarely intervening, he sees every task as a possibility for growth
Joaquin Pheonix - The arrogant landowner who funds the cult in exchange for power
Anna Paquin - The servant girl who betrays him for Garrett
Meat Loaf - Rival Police Lieutenant. Both are fighting for the same promotion but who will be the one to finally bring Garrett in?
David Spade - the first guard to die
They have to use a minimalist full-of-shadows action-happens-off-screen approach. The tools will look cool onscreen, so will scenes with mythological creatures. An undead sequence would be awesome too - like combining Interview with the Vampire and Batman.

oh yeah, and Ian Holm as a post-thief Constantine. He can be in the undead sequence.

Hmmm... Sam Raimi is apparently already contracted to do Spiderman 3.. But if we can pull Tobey away to do a Thief movie, perhaps that will give Raimi time to recruit Bruce Campbell and make Evil Dead 4... Mwa ha ha...my plan is coming along nicely... Yes, that's right, I'd be willing to sacrifice the holy name of Thief for Evil Dead 4 in an instant....
