My money would be on Jason statham for garrett but i think Vigo Mortenson would be the best choice..I do agree when he was in the prancing pony smoking..man it was garrett.

Okay, I'd avoided doing a definitive "list" but since I'm a massive thief fan and I've been reading all these other lists, I thought why the hell not.
Since forever I've wanted Johnny Depp as Garrett - there's no question of his acting ability and he's the perfect match for a director in Tim Burton - come on, how could this guy not have been mentioned? He's perfect for this. Dark, creepy, unsettling imagery produced by Burton would be perfect for this, and if Danny Elfman pulled himself out of the techno-arabic rut he's been in for the past few soundtracks and get back to his strings-choral combination that worked so perfectly in Batman, we could have the perfect soundtrack to match the tone of the movie.
Remember, the music in a movie will be completely different from the game - as we all know movies with computer game music (see Matrix sequels for examples) makes the whole thing seem stupid and unrealistic.
So far I have:
Cast:
Garrett: Johnny Depp
Crew:
Director: Tim Burton
Music: Danny Elfman
And onto the rest. I have an image in my mind of Patrick Stewart pulling out all of the glottal shakespearean stops and submerging himself into the role of Constantine. I think he could pull it off - any other immediate choices are too stereotypical for the villains in movies and wouldn't work.
Monica Bellucci was suggested for Viktoria but the Italian accent would knock it out of whack for me, other than that I'd have her - oh boy, I'd have her, but regardless, we need depth and a convincing actress. Nicole Kidman is good, but I don't know how she'd look with black hair ... a young, sexier Angelica Huston would work... but in the end, Viktoria would be the hardest to cast. She needs to be dark, sexy and still convincing, a tough batch of objectives to fulfill.
Other than that, take an actor like Sam Rockwell as Cutty or John C. Reilly as Basso, and you'd have yourself a cast.

Thief in my opinion has a great story, but for a film, its ttttooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long. Think about the way Aliens versus Predator is going, the director hasnt got a clue about it, and thief could have a similar problem if they cant find a good director.
As for an actor for Garrett i really dont know, there just isnt any cynical weary of the world, i hate everything which doesnt get me any money kinda actors if u get what i mean.
I'd like a thief film, but maybe it would be a better serialisation maybe? i dunno, im just ramblin lol.
Hell why dont they just get the chaps responsible to the kick ass thief cut scenes to do the same with actors:D

one thing else DANNY GLOVER. NO. not in any film. ever. he is the worst actor on this planet. he sux. no argument. god awful.

thief miniseries
20 episodes or so, covering thief1, 2 and 3
Blackjack4Hire on 5/12/2003 at 23:35
a mini series would be best i think. consider thief gold 18 LEVELS, cmon u just cant do that in one film, but hell why dont they just pick up the thief community from their safe houses and say "here make us a film and you can have lots of money and access to the actors you want". yes that work, but then who would go to see it !!!!:p
Blackjack4Hire on 6/12/2003 at 00:01
this is beginning to look like spam lol, but here is some more of my opinion lol.
viggo mortensten would be ok i guess, but thinking back on the pipe scene in fotr, well do u honestly see garrett with a pipe, i dont lol.
for me the garret look is half the face covered with a cloak hood not the seeing just the eyes, think about the game intros and cut scenes, like the ones where you see garret of course. there is the inspiration for the character.
hhhhhmmmmmmmmmm do you think any of the actors would mind having their eye torn out lol, cmon can u really see contact lenses providing the right mech eye effect.
god arnt i the best at ranting.
oh well i guess its cos of my love for the thief series lol.

In my opinion....Jack Nicholson IS the Trickster and Daniel Day Lewis IS Garrett. ;)

I hope the film never sees the light of day.
If the film is made (because aliens gave us a choice between making that film - and no other - or being destroyed along with the whole galaxy) then I hope the film stars a bunch of unknown actors chosen for their skills. Hugh Jackman worked as Wolverine precisely for that reason.
I hope Hollyweird is not involved in any artistic decision whatsoever.
I hope the screenwriter positively hates video games.
I hope the director never listens to THIEF fans, lest her mind be infected with dreadful mental rot.
But, most of all, I wish for the project to be shelved, destroyed, hexed, cursed, bound in litigations, returned to sender, thrown out of court and never, ever be so much as mentioned again.
Hollywood: keep your grubby meat-hooks as far away from my beloved as possible.

As I offered elsewhere, what makes you think the movie's plot would have
anything whatsoever other than taking a few names ("Garrett"), and perhaps some of the steampunk atmosphere and making it into another Tomb Raider?. Afaik, Tomb Raider(s) nor X-men(x2) were not taken, in any part, from the games or comics. Same probably goes for Spiderman, though I haven't seen it.
We'd be completely naive to believe it would, in any way, stick to the original. Have we really degraded to a fanboyish point where we believe this? Builder save us all . Sure, Garrett had enough far-fetched Indiana Jones-esque adventures to warrant them sticking to the story, but we really can't take for granted that they
would.
Just my thought, though I agree that all or mostly all unknowns would be good. Think of LOTR.. It had a few famous actors, but PJ himself said he thought it would be a better to get into the different characters if they were relative unknowns rather than all the big names we've seen in dozens of films.
deadman.
