Just realized!
Victoria: Kate Beckinsale
I didn't even know of her before Underworld, but just realized she could do it.
Now we've only to make one huge list of potentials (contributed by members) and vote on 'em ;) :p

Having all these big name stars for the film, would absolutely EAT the freaking budget up, and to be quite honest there are thousands of talented actors and actresses out there who could fill the role of Garret and company easily, and convincingly there's no need to give these roles to people who are already established, with connections and money.
And big name actors only detract from the role they are trying to play, even the aforementioned John Malkovich is too recognizable.
You don't need stars to make a movie, what you need is a viable script and a director with some sense.
However, I have to agree with Deadman and SirVincealot here I hope thiis idea never leaves pre- production hell because chances are it won't be accurate at all, or they'll add shit that doesn't belong pissing everyone off, or worse yet they'll get some hack director to do it like Simon West the turd behind Street Fighter, and Tomb Raider.
And as for the visuals, don't hold your breath on anything looking remotely believable, you'd have the entire movie CG' ed to death, as opposed to having actual scale models, and sets, and so much so that the in- game FMVs end up looking better.
Then add in some nu- metal crap music, and you've got your Thief movie.
And believing that a fan could do the movie justice is also foolish, look at the AvP movie, I'm a regular at the gamegossip boards, Anderson is messing with continuity and he brought the xenos to earth we can kiss the validity of Ripley's entire quest goodbye now, and the Preds have been turned into friggin' samurai from space.=p
Garrett would be gutted by Hollywood.

Well said, I think you win on that argument there.

Why is everybody arguing about actors? Don't anyone think that music and sound FXs play a big role also in movies as well as in games?
First of all, I would forget eric Brosius & Co. As a film music freek I can name couple potential composers who could really make the kind of dark music like in the thief games.
If I would look for my favorite composer, I would name Vangelis (1492 Conquest of Paradise, Blade Runner,Chariots of fire..) or Hans Zimmer (Gladiator,MI2,Face OFF,TheThinRedLine,PearlHarbor...) no doubt.
In the first place, a true symphonic music would not be considered? So veterans like John Williams, James Horner, Howard Shore... would not be counted.
But I assume we are looking for a composer doing a dark synth music. Therefore even Hans Zimmer wouldn't be necessarily a good choise, even though he is an excellent synth musician and can adapt to any kind of movie theme.
One name comes on my mind, Danny Elfman! He's done the music for films like Batman trilogy, PLanet of the Apes, Nightmare before Xmas,Sleepy Hollow, Spider man, music for darkened theathre, you name it. Danny Elfman isn't necessarily a synth music guru, but he can do wonders, and especially dark thief kind of music.
what do you think? opinions?

Craig Armstrong!
just take a listen to the Plunkett & Macleane score
once he'd have a good listen to the source material i'm sure he'd pull off a great thiefy score
or grab the frontline assembly guys.. they could probably do thiefy stuff too
still, above all i would be most concerned of the visual look of it
i would very much like if they preserved the disjointed, sketchy but beautiful visuals of the cutscenes
Maitreya on 30/12/2003 at 22:50
I'm a big fan of Zimmer, I think he has a very eclectic style Black Hawk Down was everything from rock, to traditional Senegalese music, and then add a smattering of blues on some of them.
Or maybe Trent Reznor?
Elliot Goldenthal is really good, too, especially on the Alien3 OST.
I don't know if there any anime fans here, or at least anyone whose seen the movie Jinroh but Hajime Mizoguchi would be really good too. Don't believe me? Just download the main theme from that movie and tell me it isn't pure genius.
Another, really good composer from the east would be AR Rahman, he's quite capable of doing the synth sound that Thief might need, as well as using traditional intruments to compose really dark, and haunting, music like the main theme from the movie Fire.
The main thing about Thief visuals, would be to preserve the noir- ish look to it by not turning on a big ass light bulb on everything. *cough* Alien Resurrection*cough*
Ridley Scott, would be more than capable of this.

Greets!
If they have to make this into a movie, Danny Elfman is the only one who could truly do the shadows any justice with music.
Actors... Hrm... If we could make Willem Dafoe about 10 years younger, my vote would be for him. But Tobey? Good gods-- My eyes are bleeding already from the thought!
Getting Geoffrey Rush in one of the villain roles would be impeccable. Unfortunately, most of the known actros who are leathery enough and skilled enough are over 40. Garrett doesn't strike me as being more than about 30, 35 at most.
Shadows protect,
