Hmm.... Low budget... Christopher Lambert.... High budget.... well I like Mr. Aragorn actor-dude as suggested above, but how about Robert DeNiro?

Not Deniro. To old, I think. To slick, too.
Although Highlander is one of my favorite series of movies or television shows, I don't think Christopher Lambert would work. His voice and look is all wrong.
Also, the guy is legally blind without his bottle thick glasses. In the latest Highlander movie (Highlander: Endgame) he actually had to memorize the choriography perfectly, since he couldn't see Adrian Paul's sword until it was less than a foot from his face.
And since this role would require a LOT of sneaking in the dark, I think a near blind man wandering about in the dark without his goggle-glasses would just be a bad idea. Kind of ruin the effect of a good blackjack when he bumps into the guard instead of clubbing them.

Christian Slater hasn't worked in a while... he could also play a bad guy.
Or they could go with experienced ex-con Robert Downey j.r.
Wynona Ryder could play opposite him as a girl thief in a subplot.
Hey! She may have already been picked for the movie... maybe it really WAS just acting practice for a film like she claimed!

I saw this guy, right. It was in some medeaval thing. He had a hood on and everything. And I said to myself "Hey he kinda reminds me of Garrett".
Get him

This is my choice for the older version of Garrett, Robert Patrick, he's played on the X-files, oh of course, get rid of the tie. To me he's perfect for the older version of Garrett.

I really DON'T believe this! TOBIAS VINCENT MAGUIRE as GARRETT?! THE GUY WHO DOES YOGA AND LOVES TO COOK?! No way! I'd die before I let Tobey play the role of Garrett. He simply doesn't fit the role.
ANywayz, I'd rather pick Stuart Townsend to play the part. He's a great actor who can portray serious, gothic roles. And Tobey is just, well, not Garrett material.
garretts_shadow on 15/11/2003 at 16:34
I found more rather disturbing news about Tobey---He doesn't Drink nor Smoke. He LOVES tofu and is a VEGETARIAN.
Why would someone pick him for Garrett's role? That person must be out of his/her mind! He's too much of a good person. IT'S DISTURBING...

Firstly, my sentiments run similar to everyone elses, Toby 'frikking' Maguire!?! WTF!! Thats not happening.
Secondly, a thief film with Garrett as the main character wouldn't work. Film's need dialogue, its all fair and good in a game to have one protaganist not engaged in much (or nearly none) convo, but to have a film like that would be a disaster. So there could be two ways this film could go, one lots of heists featuring Garrett sneaking around, very much like the game. I mean I don't know, but I just wouldn't enjoy that very much, I would rather play the game. Or the film could go in the other direction (like most other heist films) have one short heist at the beginning to set the scene and then a big one at the end, with most of the film given over to building up to the last heist, ie talking in taverns, getting contacts scouting the place, maybe some intrigue subplot. Not too bad, but not really all that special, and you wouldn't be able to see much of the actual world or the history, or the amazing subplot (unless you want, whenever he comes across a book, Garrett to start reading aloud). I don't think that would do justice to the game, or in fact be a good film.
Personally I would go for a different perspective. Not from a thiefs point of view, but from one of the organizations in the City; say for example The Hammers, or the nobles, or even the keepers. A good story may be looking at the formation of Mechanists from the Keepers point of view as they spy on Karras and gather infomation. So you could have a scene of how Karras starts deviating from the hammers, then as it ends, you see a Keeper leave the shadows and follow him back to a Keeper compound.
Another good story would be the fall of the Hammerite Cathedral. Thats always been a really cool story (I especially like the short story by Octopus). That would be a really good story leading up to the first game. It could start with how the Hammerites find the Eye, then things get wierder and wierder towards the end, till the dead start rising and the great fight begins. Then the end could be the Keepers sealing the Cathedral, and the Eye screaming vengence, then the final thing before the credits would be some kind of Keeper Prophecy about Garrett (or possibly the Trickster).
Oh and Dustin Hoffman should definately play a Keeper.

Yes, quite too old. I think we've all agreed he has to be young and in-shape enough to do his own stunts, or at least the running around bit. The Wachowski's were right for wanting their actors to be able to do their own fighting, hence I think that approach would be best taken here. Besides, he's too Brooklyn. I just can't see Garrett talking like a mob boss or 1920's gangster :p. Nor do I think Garrett's Italian-American =P
I think my theory of "whatever age range you are = age you think (want) Garrett is" still holds true. But even so, Thief II happened a year (correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while) after the events of Thief: TDP, right? And in the beginning of TDP, he was just beginning to do his thieving bit after leaving The Keepers. Keeper training may take a while, but not
that long. And he was quite young by any account (in his teens most-likely) when he first encountered the Keeper. We don't quite know the time period the events of TDP took place, but again, I doubt it was several years. What it boils down to is I don't think Garrett is in his fourties, but more like his mid thirties, or even late twenties. Remember: Garrett has been through
a lot and is much more cynical and careworn than most of his age. I think we all agree on that. Plus, he's been through quite a few batterings and near-fatal situations. So, maybe the actor would be in their thirties, but they would perhaps be playing someone of a younger age.
I don't agree without seeing more photos of Stephen Russell (and info on his physical health and fitness level) that he should automatically be penned for the part; as others have said, Tobey is a big actor and will bring manya common man to the theaters, but wouldn't it be best to ask him what his thoughts were? He didn't '
just' do Garrett's voice, but he also had to get
inside the character, figure out his motivations, fears, thought processes and even past in order to portray the character as he was intended to be portrayed. If this isn't just a mere rumor and has some truth to it, I'm sure they will mangle and alter in order to entice more mainstream audiences, but if they do take any hints from the devs and creators, I'm sure they'll at least think of asking Stephen what his take is. I hope they do. They're idiots otherwise. Wait.. They
are idiots otherwise :nono:.
deadman.
P.S. I'm still with Viggo as top choice. Also, as I wrote elsewhere, Trent Reznor seems to have a Garrett thing going with proper make-up and all (I'll repost the photo if anyone likes.. Wait, here:

Forget about who he is for a second and just look at the photo. Maybe it's just my opinion..
