You see a lot of posts here that claim Toby Maguire is the worst choice, or that he'd only do a young Garrett justice, but I implore you, oh nay sayers, how many of you have a better suggestion?
I for one would be excited if the entire crew from Spiderman (Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and yes, Toby Maguire) all pitched in to create a Thief movie. Simply due to the fact that Sam Raimi is a pro when it comes to capturing stories accurately (I believe Spiderman is evidence enough, if not his other ventures).
Alternatively we could see a whole new spin on the Thief movies, that of a female hero, and a new story that simply builds off of whatever Ion Storm has in it's oven.
These are simply ideas of mine own obviously, coupled with my opinions. Feel free to 'flame on' and make the Torch proud!

I never pictured Garrett a smoker, or a drinker. I don't see him as a Vegetarian either, but we're going for steampunk world savvy cynical Thief, not Metal Gear Solid Snake.
Also, I think Trent does have this Thief thing in the chin, but otherwise he lacks experience as an actor, and I for one do not want another musician on screen.

Im I the only one who likes the idea? Mabey a bad choice for lead actor but done right the movie could be cool. And didn't we discuss who would be perfect for the role a year or so ago (two years...I don't know). Did anyone say "what a terrible idea" back then? Im suprised by the overwhelming negative reaction. I guess im alone on this one.

When i heard about the possible Thief movie i almost puked with excitement. But McGuire? Apparently no one hasnt done ANY research on the game when they chose him as a possible Garett.

firstly if theyre even considering tobey for this part then i come to the conclusion that they havent done any character research on the game, they just looked at ion storm, "well gee theyre making two games". theyre already making a deus ex movie then some executives had a brainstorm over how to make more money and thought "what about the other game which theyre making, whats it called?? oh yes THIEF, what a name.......Why dont we put some generic people in from hollywood who could bring in the mass appeal?"

we all no that when eidos could turn its back on looking glass when they were soooo close to releasing thief II, that eidos doesnt care about the ideals or quality that most people value, in this day and age of 100's of games coming out per month maybe even weeks, no one cares as much as they should!!!! i mean the games industry is bigger than the movie and music industry put together, but does that mean theyll take the time to make a decent movie of a game. nooooooo!!!!!!!!
but the actors i would like to see in this part are: viggo mortessen, jhonny depp, hugh jackman!!!!!

I agree with you, Hugh Jackman or Viggo could play the role of Garrett well. But sometimes I think, would it be better if they cast someone who is unknown? Because I think that if they cast someone who is a well known hollywood actor for the part... well let's just say that it might not be too good for the game. Whilst if they cast someone who is unknown, the whole feel of the movie would be fresh and original (not thatI'm saying Thief is the most original on the genre).
Who knows? This might attract new fans to thief....

I think that Daniel Day-Lewis could do an amazing portrayl of Garrett. Otherwise, I second the suggestions of Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) and Hugh Jackman.
But really, I think that a movie based on Thief is a terrible idea - as are all games->movies to date.

Well, they have Tobey Mcguire, and Mark Gordon, both of which are BIG names in the industry. I am going to say that they are taking it seriously, and we MAY actually see a decent game-to-movie translation.

well, that was alot to read, and if i wasn't to lazy to get outta my chair, I might not have read it all, but... oh well. my opinion is that Viggo or Mel Gibson should play the part of Garret. And I think the cinematographer from Unbreakable should be involved in the movie. Think about the scene when Bruce is in the cape and hood and is creaping around the house in the rain. and he appears behind the guy. or when he appears in the window, before he gets tossed out. Also, the creators of Seven should be involved, because a thief movie should be as dark as Seven was. As for Viktoria, the Mistic from X-Men should do it, because she is tall, hot, and used to wearing latex suits! :cheeky: as for thief not even being a good idea, stop your blaspheming right now. :devil: Dialoge and plot could be told by guards/peasants/other people, and while Garret does have to be quiet while on the job, it doesn't stop him from doing monologs to the audience, like him reading to himself. I do agree that it should be a few small jobs to set things up, then some big job with set up time. Caseing the joint would be interesting, then coming back to find out things were changed, yada yada yada.... but i do think Thief could be a great movie. but it all rests on too many things, so i won't keep my hopes up. and unfortunately, unless they plan on actually using the story from thief I or II, then it is not likely that Viktoria or Constaintine would be in it [SPOILER]because they die. Constantine in the Thief I and Viktoria in Thief II. However, i am aware that they reshowed the tricksters eye for Thief II, but then never showed him, so it might be possible that they are keeping him around.[/SPOILER] anyways, that's just my opinion. let the ranting and raving continue until everyone is taffered out and finally goes back to taffin' about and then to taffin' some taffers. :thumb: i, however, and goin' to find a place to sleep.
