1-) A new adventure with Garrett in the same old but good style
2-) An adventure with a new personnage
3-) An adventure with the child caught by Garrett (boy)
4-) An adventure with the child caught by Garrett (girl)
5-) Something other...

I think that, assuming it's going to be a sequel, it'll be impossible to have a storyline in the old style. In TDP and TMA, it was the keepers that influenced Garrett's moves, for example in TMA when the Keeper gives him the location of Karras and Truarts' meeting point, or in TDP when they cut him free in Constantine's manor.
As we can see at the end of TDS, Garrett is finally embracing his role as a Keeper. However, with no glyphs to read and no prophecies, it will be impossible to have their insight into the events of the storyline.
The whole purpose of the Keepers seems to be to keep the balance. In TDP, the pagans would have been able to take over once and for all. The same goes for the Mechanists in TMA. in TDS it was a new enemy that threatened to take over, but thanks to the hag's infiltration of their ranks, they were unable to forsee it and deal with it in advance.
Maybe an alternative could be that some new faction arises and it's up to Garrett (and perhaps his apprentice) to ensure that they don't manage to take over the world and screw it up for the rest of them. But who knows? We'll just have to wait and see!

I don't mind several missions with different personages living at different times. The fall of Karath-Din, catastrophe with The Eye, discovering of Transmutation Glyph — and there's always someone behind the scenes: a keeper, a traitor, someone who have their own agenda etc.
O maybe a Keeper who will try to enter the past (using time distortion in the Cradle or something else) to kill Gamall before she would obtain her full power so that activation of Final Glyph would not be needed at all…

I suggest renaming the title to "in Thief 4, what new adventure would you like to see?"
This is a tough question though. I honestly can't give a straight answer right now. First off, I haven't played thief 3 all the way through yet, so I don't know how the series ended. I've got an idea about possibly a new character (From thief 3 ending), but please don't spoil the ending for me!:o
Secondly, I'm torn between having a Thief 4 that is of one of three possibilities:
a.) Garrett is still the main character, it's just a new age, and he's older. (new storyline and new levels, more advanced engine, etc.) [This is probably the most ideal sequel, if done right, and what many thief fans would expect.]
b.) You have a new character, but it's within the same "thief world" as thief 1 & 2 or 3. It'd take place in a "new age", after thief 2. Whether this is 20 years later, or five years later is up to the developers. Though I wouldn't mind revisiting the older style. Which brings me to being torn between having a more modern game versus an old style game like thief 1 & 2:
c.) New character, new plot, new world, etc. Everything is new, no relation to the old game except for the same style, and using the same kind of equipment. Maybe have some new stuff, sorta like how thief 3 added climbing gloves, and thief 2 adding the scouting orb, etc. Note: There's a fine line they can't cross. This won't be a 21st century video game. If it is, I'll be quite sour about thief 4.:erg::mad:
I think the bottom line is it can't be a modern game with guns and what not... Then it's not the thief we grew up with, it's just another stealth ripoff game or copycat, like splinter cell and so forth. (Not that I hate splinter cell, it's just not thief.)
edit:
Oops... I just thought of a fourth possibility. It could be a game set during the same time frame as thief 1 or 2, but you don't play as garrett. You play as someone else. Which is sort of what T2X is, I guess.

I'm fairly confident I've seen a poll like this before.

Given a choice, I'd like to see a prequel with Garrett taking place after the TDP training mission and before Bafford's, rather than trying (and likely failing) to force out a continuance of the series.

That's actually a great idea. That'd be a fifth possibility. Only problem I see with that is for Eidos Montreal to pull that off, they'd have to study thief 1 extensively and try to make a game that doesn't deviate too much from what we know.

I like Garrett, I really do...but I think maybe if they do a new game, us seeing the game through his eyes are done. This doesn't mean Garrett can't be IN it...but his part seems like it should be more of a mentor or a highly important secondary character. Or, possibly, the antagonist (not evil, just working against the player's goals; the player is definitely going to be a thief, after all).
It would be interesting to see an evolution of Garrett's world, much in the way Terry Pratchett's Discworld evolves over time. It doesn't have to lose the weird, wonderful steampunk/fantasy flavor, but it could be modernized a bit in strange ways. I mean, Bioshock would be a good example to compare to, and how their underwater world evolved without popular trends getting in the way; the scientists may have been smart, but they loved that 1930s art deco style. Maybe huge, room-filling rudimentary computers operated by steam and gears, or aristocrats that host lavish parties with crude, automaton butlers (though without those Mechanist influences). And that's not even counting what the Pagans have come up with in that time (maybe hydroponic stations with magical plants presided over by the monkeymen, since the Hammers have destroyed so much wilderness? THAT would be a creepy level). But maybe that's getting a little too sci-fi, but it would be interesting to see how the world of Thief evolves after maybe 10, 20 years.
And again, regardless of protagonist, there should be a new one. Too much expectation would be demanded of Garrett to return by now as the hero, and having somebody else slip into those shoes would have a tough time filling them, certainly, but I think it would be for the best. Again, Garrett should be a major player in the story, but let him advise or confront rather than be playable. As long as they don't MGS2 the story, it'll be fine (and I don't mean introduce Raiden out of thin air; I meant bore us to death with endless cutscenes containing flashbacks within flashbacks).;)

I fully agree. This way, tribute can be payed to the original (T1&2), but we also get something new and possibly with an interesting twist (Garrett has his own agenda). I like Garrett too, but I think a new main character would be more interesting.

I fully agree again. Maybe it could take place say 20-30 years after T2. A lot could happen with The City in 20 years. The developers must be certain to study The City's technology in T1 and T2 (electricity, plumbing etc...) and then imagine what that could evolve into.
It would also be interesting to see what the Pagans would be up to. I would say that the Trickster's minions (apebeasts, bugbeasts and the likes) disappeared when the Trickster disappeared, though, but the Pagans could have formed some kind of alliance or relation to the other critters (burricks, craymen, spiders).
The fantastical creatures (zombies, haunts etc...) also belong in Thief.
With that said, I am still not sure that I even want Thief 4. Part of me does (I like playing Thief and there is so much potential for a great game) and part of me doesn't (I don't very much trust anyone else but us fans to do it right, unfairly so perhaps, but for someone who might be new to Thief to realise and bring fourth the potential and at the same time connect it with the past would require a lot of research that might not be possible, but then again, greypatch3's suggestions would make it easier).
