Musk really lost it on this one.
Great rescue mission. Terrifying though.

Meh, idiots shouldn't attack Musk for responding to requests to help. Bring out the world's smallest violin.

And maybe Musk shouldn't attack rescuers who risked (and, in one case, lost) their lives, just because they don't think highly of his fancy ideas.
In one place, the tunnel was reportedly so narrow that the walls scraped the diver's back and chest. Yeah, if the diver who knows the caves in and out says that the submarine wouldn't have worked, I'm inclined to believe them.

The most narrow place was 38 cm x 85 cm.
Good luck getting any device through that.
Musk might be a smart guy. (Although chances are greater that he just got lucky with PayPal).
But in situations like this, being smart usually doesn't help at all.
What counts is experience.
Knowing what is likely to go wrong.
Knowing all the little things that might go wrong.
Knowing how to deal with setbacks.
Knowing all the alternative ways to deal with a sudden problem through improvisation.
Staying calm at all times.
Being able to deal with fatigue.
All these things come through experience. Not by being smart.
Being smart is not gonna help you when you're in a cave, in muddy water, constant currents, narrow passages, etc.
Musk doesn't even realize this.
