I really need to write this because I'm filled with rage. I want a way to PERMANENTLY disable the instant search features that you see on most modern search engines which I won't bother to name. Sometimes I will start typing and the carrot changes focus on me automatically. Other times, I will finish typing what I want to search for, hit enter, and have a blank page with nothing but a search bar displayed until I manually refresh.
I know these search engines let you stay logged in and then disable these features from within your account, but I would prefer not to be spied on and have everything I ever look up stored and associated with my account forever.
So, do I have to set my browser to use only basic HTML except on sites that I need enhanced code for video and the like? I already use NoScript and Adblock to reduce the amount of crap I'm exposed to.

They (always...they) already tag every search query to your IP anyway. Might as give yourself a bit of convenience before Ingsoc drags you off to Miniluv.
Or if you don't want to do that, you could reenable your cookies so it remembers when you've shut instant search off.

What on earth is an "instant search" feature? The search suggestions that appear under the entry box?
If it annoys you that much, just set your browser to disable JavaScript on that page. Should be two clicks (depending on browser).
If the browser randomly repositions your caret based on that appearing, then there's something wrong with your browser. Disable extensions that might be messing with it or file a bug report.
Don't even search from search engine front pages if you use them regularly, set up a search hotkey so you can just type "g whatever" into the address bar and go straight to the search results.

Instant Search is this goofy, somewhat useless feature Google has fallen in love with where it displays all the hits for your queries as you're typing them in. Like if you want to search for turkeys, when you hit T, it'll show you the results for T, Tu will bring up all the links to the shroud of turin, and on and on...until you get to turkeys.
All that work, for no other reason than to save you the trouble of having to type out an entire word, and hit the enter key.

Doesn't do anything weird like that for me in any browser I try it on, how strange and troubling.

Just type into your address bar.

Presumably not available in my country. And there is, of course, an option to turn it off, so no reason to complain.
I love instant-filtering searches like that in things like preference windows, but I'd imagine it'd be annoying due to the (relatively) slow speed of the internet.

I don't mind the auto suggestions. What pisses me off is when Google decides that I didn't really want to search for what I typed, and instead shows me results for what it thinks I should have typed.
