Instant search is annoying, but instant suggestions is really helpful. If, for instance, I suspect there's a problem with the ABS in my Oldsmobile, but I don't exactly know how to word my query, I start typing Oldsmobile (check) Cutlass (check) 91 (still good) ABS (right) and then a list of popular searches that begin with that phrase will immediately appear, saving me the time of having to guess the best way of wording my search in order to get the most relevant results.

I would like it better if it didn't change what I type at all, while it offers suggestions below only. Pressing the left or right arrow keys, for scenarios when it's faster than using the mouse to place the cursor, just to add quotation marks to narrow a search down, results in overwriting the words I typed, which I have to type over, including the quotes or whatever adjustments, to continue what I intended. The feature's usually convenient, but time saved can then get eaten back up by momentary memory lapses, muscle memory, and just not always foreseeing unintended results. I do like it most when what I want rises to the top almost instantly, living up to the feature's name, when I'm not on my own system using my own bookmarks.

If only we all had writing speed of 50 characters per minute...
Between autocomplete and instant search, Google became literaly unusable for me. So I switched to duckduckgo, and I recommend lost_soul doing the same.

I really like instant search.

I'm with lost_soul on this a bit; there have been many times when I've typed something, it's autocorrected/assumed what I wanted, then when I change it back, I'm left with a blank page no matter how many times I hit search, and when you start again the same cycle happens. It gets rid of " " marks as it sees fit, too.

Well, if by any chance you`re one of the few left that are not mind - controlled by G..oo..e, try my new best friend ixquick.com. It`s a fully private meta search that doesn`t log *&^%.
Other option - Opera with it`s ingenious Create Search thingy...

The funny thing is, Firefox actually stole this feature a few versions back, but no one seems to know this.
