ive had an interesting idea on how to implement Thief LAN w/o Thievery UT (though it does kick ass). this may be a bit of a canyon-sized stretch, but im just throwin the idea out there.
what we
could do is utilize SDL and C++ to make an engine for Thief much the way the Exult team did for Ultima VII ((
http://exult.sourceforge.net) clicky). youd need the original game, but the engine would not only fix some problems with OS compatibility, but also implement LAN capability as an "added bonus". im a n00b C++ programmer at best, and im not saying i can do this myself, god knows i have a hard enough time making a simple console game with it as it is, much less a far more complex game engine with LAN capability. im just throwin out this idea to those more well-versed in the ways of C++ than i could take a crack at this. im also going on the assumption (fairly safe, imo) that Thief II was written, for the most part, in C++, as most games of that time were, that or C.
like i said before, this is a longshot at best, im just throwin it out there for the pros to look at and possibly take a collective crack at.

I don't have any informed opinion about how reasonable this is, but I just wanted to say that I do think it would be fun to tackle some of the big FMs along with other people. I'm predicting that it wouldn't be as popular as something like Thievery, at least it won't generate anything like a "regular" playing crowd. But I don't think it needs to do that to be worth doing, either (since this discussion has come up before; many times actually). It would still be fun to do on a more ad hoc kind of basis to get a few interested people together and playing an FM or two together. And since there are like 500 FMs now there's plenty of material to keep people interested and things wouldn't get old.
How would you handle objectives? Would there be a single set and *any* player could fulfill an objective, so when it's fulfilled for one person it's fulfilled for everybody? That seems to be the best thing to do.

*forces self to stop drooling at that screenshot*
anyway. um... it's an interesting idea, to be sure. and there's also the possibility of FMs designed for more than one thief... either working cooperatively ("you distract the guard, and i'll go get the scepter") or competitively (heh heh heh...)
i like the idea of a competitive thiefing, especially if the server doesn't tell you if someone has joined the game- thus leaving you to run into someone you weren't expecting.

and while were on the topic, anyone know how to utilize file i/o in C++? i need it for save files. i also need to be able to search the files for a certain string (like "[Name]") and look for the data after that, read it, then store it in a var.
