okay. i begin to install deus ex (again, after my STUPID brother deleted it) and it seems to work okay. then, it gets to /System/DeusExCharacters.u and messes up. it gives me the message:
"Failed reading source file...../System/DeusExCharacters.u (The operation completed successfully)
The source media may be bad....(it tells me to clean the cd and check the drive)"
after reading all these posts about favorite parts and fun things i really wanna play it again, and this just REALLY pisses me off! i've installed it before, so i know it's not the computer, but my brother did loan it to his friend once so maybe he messed it up. i have this same kinda problem with Baldur's Gate I. i click on "install" and it just freezes up. it, too, i have installed before.
i'm sure someone out there knows what the problem is. could i just copy the files to the hard disk and then run install? any help would be VERY appreciated.

You can copy the game to your HD and install from there (in fact, this is a common remedy for this problem), or you could simply copy the game and make a link to Deusex.exe and not even have to install it. Usually this error is from your CD drive not properly reading the disk. Deus Ex was overburned, meaning they crammed more stuff on the disk then they should have. No specific brands/models of drives have this problem, it just kinda happens.

Hi Bionicman...
Sorry you are having the problem. Most likely...Phydeaux is correct, it is due to the over-burned Origional Deus Ex CD. Game of the Year CD does not suffer from the same problem.
If installing from the HD as suggested does not correct it you can send me an email. After ummm "verifying ownership" (sighs) we can send you a regular "74 Minute Version" of the CD that we have created Eidos TechSupp for just such an occaision. It does not have Less Deus Ex on it. Jsut a better burn job I think.
The different disc should correct the problem of your CD-ROM not liking the overburned disc.

okay, thanks for all the help!
so, i do as you say, phydeaux, and mkae a link to "deusex.exe" on the cd. this is what i'm supposed to do, right? anyway, so i run it, it does the "first time config", then goes to the loading screen (y'know, the cool triangle thing with "Deus Ex" under it. what IS that thing, anyway? ), then.....(give yah a hint: ) "Please insert the cd entitled..blah blah blah blah blah!"
hmm....(this is me thinking)... of course! i had an old no-cd hack from when my brother loaned it to his friend. so, i opened up the deus ex folder, ran it, and.....(give yah another hint: ). "deusex.ini", which is needs to be deleted for it to work, is, apparently, installed during installation, but is not physically on the disk...or something like that....
looks like i might need that 74 minute version, catsclaw...

p.s. the install from the hard drive doesn't work, either. it gives me some message about "history" doing somethin or another... then i tried copying the setup then linking it to the setup on the disk, and, no cigar, the same "deusexcharacters.u" still messes up.
p.p.s. i have this one question: why did it work the first time and not the second? this doesn't make since (okay, maybe it does, but the only thing i REALLY know about computers is that i'm good at their games ).
