So....I just wanted to say... FUCK DRM!!!
So my shiny new Sager, with a Core I7, huge amounts of RAM, a pretty sweet Graphics chip, and a huge hard drive arrived day. I was thrilled.
Catch is, its four hours later and I have yet to play a single game on it. Due to having changed my STEAM password to keep a stalker-ex from breaking into my account, I don't have the password for that. No access to that until they take the week or however long to get back to me. I also purchased Crysis off Impulse. Everything went smoothly, until it decided that my serial key was invalid. Fuck Impulse.
Anyone remember the days when you could just put a game in and PLAY IT?

Or even the days when you remembered your own passwords?
And you can reset your Steam password in about 1 minute. If you're not a dimwit that is.

Eh, I understand the frustration, but tbh, we are way past the "steam running like utter shit" days. It has its occasional burps but, imho, the pros far outweigh the cons at this point.
My tarded uni blocks all gaming ports, including steam, meaning I need to go and have a little "study session" at my local starbucks to connect to it. I heard all the dreaded offline mode stories and expected the worst, but been pleasantly surprised. The download speeds have been marvelous, and using the offline mode when I return to my dorm has not given me any issues at all. Combined with ridiculously cheap prices (christmas deals) and a huge catalog, Steam has become pretty much my exclusive game provider, aside from GoG for the oldies.
(56k modem users need not post in this thread).

Actually its not always that simple, when I was on a uni network I couldn't log in since steam was blocked, and as I had an actual net connection it wouldn't allow me to switch to offline mode.
I got around this with a vpn program, but I haven't had to enter a p/w for steam in 4 years, if I don't use something daily I'm likely to forget...like my own mobile phone number etc.
So what the hey, just reset password right? Nope, I had to put in a support ticket, for which I had to make a support account, then wait for 2 days until they responded.
I love steam, but sometimes its a pain in the ass.

Thats kinda the deal.....
I've been using auto-login on my old laptop for about 8 months, so I no longer remember the password. Thing is, I'm trying to avoid STEAM as much as possible because I'm going to be overseas and lucky to have any internet at all.

Nope. Not even in the DOS days, unless you pirated. Even then, at least half the titles needed a combination of tinkering and response challenges to get going.
Then again, there's GOG.

I believe he was hinting at the Windows 95/98 era of gaming. This was beyond the point where you had to tell the game all about the hardware in your system, and it was before the point when many game publishers began shipping malware-laden titles. You in fact, could HONESTLY drop a game in the drive, click install and just start playing right away.
Moreover, this was before NT squashed DOS-based systems, so even your older DOS games would still run great.. that is, as long as they weren't coded by monkeys who couldn't make proper use of timing functions on the CPU.

And here I come in this thread thinking: Holy crap, so virgins can't play videogames now? That's brilliant!
How disappointing
Renzatic on 9/4/2011 at 08:16
Let me see if I've got this straight here...
So I come into this thread expecting to read an article about how science has found some new way to keep the trailer trash sluts I usually date from cheating on me only to learn that it's just dude guy up above mad at that evil company who shall not be named because seriously fuck DRM because they're stupid enough not to remember his password for him because his crazy stalker ex wants to steal his videogames and once again seriously fuck them it's not his fault he used auto-login all the time.
Then Koki shows up and basically brags he gets laid all the time (or has been laid at least once) without saying such, because, heretofore unbeknownst to us all, he's actually quite the master of subtlety.
...:D

My only problem with Steam's offline mode is that I've got it set to that, yet I still get the box come up every time I switch on asking me if I want to go online or stay offline. Seriously, what's the point of telling it to start up in offline mode if it's just going to keep asking me whether or not I want it to start in offline mode?
I've not noticed any way of stopping that box coming up. Anybody know if I'm missing something?
