In a slightly related note, why on earth did people start calling mp3 files "podcasts"?

due to the content:
Quote:
The term "podcasting" was first mentioned by Ben Hammersley in The Guardian newspaper in a February 2004 article, along with other proposed names for the new medium.
It is a portmanteau of the words "pod"— an acronym for "Playable On Demand"—and "broadcasting".
The name may be misleading, as despite the etymology it has never been necessary to use an iPod, or, indeed, any other form of portable media player, to use podcasts; the content can be accessed using any computer that can play media files.
The diego bit is also another fun thing justifying the format of this interview.

And I'm hearing impaired. I am literally physically prevented from being able to fully enjoy a podcast. What about me? Am I forever to be shut out of this because of my disability?
I apologize there is no transcript. I realize people with a hearing disability will not be able to experience the podcast, and I have no excuse other than time constraints.
If someone spends the time transcribing these podcasts and posting them online you will have my full support, and I will link to them from the original post once they are up (if you notify me).
I may transcribe them myself in the future, if, for example, these interviews turned into some sort of a book projects or something, at which point I would also post them online. But as of right now I barely have enough time to record the podcasts, help edit them, and get them posted. Again, my apologies for not being able to provide them now.

Thanks for the permission! Now we just need someone who can step up and commit.

EDIT: This post originally contained the entirety of the interview's transcript. Al has graciously hosted the transcription on his site and the link is available below. Thanks to Al for this and for his neat work on the Dan Schmidt interview, and also to addink for his sharp ears and many corrections to the transcription.

Good stuff.
Shouldn't be too much trouble to whack it onto the page with the audio should it? (it probably is)
Anyway, this is a great series. I didn't find the questions all that leading and the hosts personal reflections didn't overwhelm things. It didn't strike me as amateurish at all, in fact (not that anyone's really saying so). I've heard plenty worse from much larger and longer lived media outlets.
Sara Verilli (and others really) are being too hard on Shock 1's interface. No one knew how to do that much interactivity with a mouse and keyboard in 3d back then. What made id games work was they basically cut it down to nothing; big buttons you bump into and that's it. Mouselook as we know it wasn't even an official option in Quake 2. Deathmatchers invented it.
It might seem self evident now that Shock's interface sucks, but back then there were a lot of busy and cluttered interfaces around. When you're blazing a trail you sometimes get stuck in the brambles a bit.
Good to know it's not just me who sat down and went through every log in the game trying to piece together the story and figure out what to do. That's another thing that doesn't get past most 'good design' metrics today. Even Shock 2 softens things a bit by making the content more to the point about which clue you are getting and what door it helps you open etc (and some people now think even that is too hard). But it made the first game so damn unforgettable, as well as frustrating and weep inducing at times.
That atmosphere of this dead place to whom you are irrelevant, filled with stories you can't ask for elaboration and clarification on. You've got to observe so acutely, not knowing what was important and what wasn't, and still infer so much. You had to be a detective. And I doubt there will ever again be a game with the gonads to do it. You can generally hear even the people who made it regretting its obscure aspects.
