Into the Witcher land I go... - by Yakoob

So after about a year of staring at the box on my shelf I finally decided to whip out The Witcher and give it a whirl. I even got the original Polish version my sister picked up when traveling to Poland a long while ago. I downloaded the 1.4 Enhanced edition Patch, the language pack and 71% on the 1.5 patch download right now.
So while the latest patch is downloading I figured id get the first one installing. first I was met with the prompt asking me to register the game, which proved to be somewhat convoluted and broken process - the installer hung on me once and I needed to register my game twice for some odd reason. Also, why did I have to register on their online forum for my cd key registration to go through? We will never know! And the ironic thing is the whole reason I even opted to update to 1.5 (aside from enhanced content) is to get the fix that removes the cd-check DRM
But anyway, finally the installer has accepted my game's registration - YAY - and I am met with this lovely message:
"Modifying game files. This may take up to two hours. Manually interrupting this process will necessitate re-installing of the game."
Seriously? Two hours? Wtf? And no progress bar either. Sure as hell hope it doesnt hang like it did before, ugh.
Welp, I guess I will console myself to some reading right now. Hopefully the night of Witcher-Playing will not be transformed into a night of Witcher-Waiting :tsktsk:

So apparently I ran out of HDD space and, upon deleting a few gigs, the installer would not let me retry, still showing the same error. so I had to abort, which in turn corrupted my current install so now I have to reinstall the game and start from scratch :nono:

Yeah I seem to remember The Witcher being a bit of a pain to get patched and up and running. :erg:

You sir, have just explained why I don't bother buying PC games anymore. Is it that much to ask to insert a disk, click install, and launch the game immediately thereafter? We do play games for fun after all, and if I wanted to simulate working tech support, I would be out volunteering to help my mom's friends with their computers.
This sort of thing comes as a surprise to me though. Aren't the guys who made The Witcher the same guys behind gog.com? Gog is an example of what I want: painless installers that just do the job and get you in the game ASAP.

If you buy the enhanced edition, that's all you have to do. The game doesn't even have any DRM tied to it.
But for those who don't want to shell out the extra cash because they already paid full price for the original game, you have the patch. It adds in all the new perks and bonuses, strips the game of any DRM, and makes the game so much nicer. Other than it being a So. Fucking. Slow. pain in the ass to install, you'd practically be looking a gift horse in the mouth by complaining about it.

Oh my god
GET OUTIf you don't bother buying PC games anymore, and you won't buy console games, and you won't even pirate because of your tinfoil hat,
WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU STILL POSTING IN GENGAMING? Go be annoying in Comm Chat with the rest of the "I don't play games anymore" crowd. Actually, no, we have enough of those, so don't do that, instead just fuck right off why don't you.

Start pirating games, that's exactly how warez works nowodays. Just swap insert a disk with mount an image.

He's an attention whore troll who needs an audience to listen while he preaches from his soap box pulpit on high. He probably imagines he's giving the poor unenlightened proles on the street pearls of uncommon wisdom.
Should have ignored him to begin with.

It's true though, console owners don't have to suffer from this extra install thing they call "post launch content"
evil cdproject, giving us massive patches containing overhauls and extra content.
