Most players infer that Constanine was just a form the Trickster took
You know, maybe if Constantine had just come out and said, "I am the Woodsie Lord, the Trickster of legend", it would settle these stupid debates.
Oh wait... HE DID.

Well, then I am truly dissappointed in the level of power this so-called god displays at the end of the Maw...
...And if that is the limit of godly power in the Thief universe
Also, I think it is more the limited level of power of a 1998 game with a renderer dating further back. Yep, 1998. A time when DirectX6 was shipping with games. Thief was one of the first games using it. You have to give the game credit though for pushing the envelope as far as it did at the time.
And every wise Initiate knows, it is the journey not the destination.

Nope, just TDP and MA, so don't spoil me yet. I know the supernatural side of the world is explored in more depth in that game, so is there something in there that contradicts these ideas? Yes/no answer only, please..
Well, a few things that knock your ideas to hell and back.
So that's a yes.

And this of course suggests that the current gods were not able to create the world. Someone else must have done it, and then either died, been forgotten or did not care about the Trickster and Master Builder having a feud with each other.
Personally I have a hard time believing any of those, and I think the Thief universe can do without another level of diety.
Well, let's see... how many creation myths are there on our own world?
How many polytheistic/dualistic pantheons?
I'd suggest that the Thief world existed long before either the Trickster or the Master Builder came into being.

i would tend to agree. possibly some protodeity that created the Thief universe and just kinda "buggered off", if you will. either that or he was sealed away because he posed a threat to someone somewhere. :erg: but hey, shit happens.
and every time i hear the word "doppelganger", i think of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and the bosses Doppelgangers 20 & 40.

I don't know that it alters the known story, since the origins of Constantine and Viktoria are never really stated. Most players infer that Constanine was just a form the Trickster took, but there's nothing saying that's the case. And I don't think Constantine tricked the Trickster... that being was probably eager to have an earthly avatar after losing most of its worshippers. If anything, the Trickster tricked Constantine. It may be that the mage simply wanted to draw power away from the Trickster while keeping his personality intact, but that the Trickster erased Constantine's personality and completely overrode his individual will.
Geez, ease up on the RPG avatar theory and go read some actual mythological literature. In a vast majority of those stories, if a god or devil wished to take a new form in order to further a plan
they did. Human, animal, monster--whatever the situation called for, it was no big deal. Certain situations needed more finesse if divine politics between gods were involved (Greek myths are rife with this sort of conflict). Sponsoring a mortal champion was usually an acceptable alternative to direct intervention; doling out various powers, favours and magical trinkets also insured a steady supply of worshippers, too.

I knew a guy who used to always say "I am God!" but that didn't make it so. It was his horribly inflated ego.

Constantine, however, proved his assertion rather effectively.

Correct.
In Constantine's case, it was the Eye that erupted from his forehead shortly after the proclamation, and the horns and hooves he sprouted that made it so!
