In other news, Apple "fans" are a bit creepy. I know of 2 friends who own iPhone 4S and queued from 3 am today to get their iPhone 5, despite them being available online - apparently they were too excited and couldn't wait. WTF? Add to this that in some of the London stores, the people in queues are cheering every person who exits with their new iPhone. ಠ_ಠ
Yup. You saw this right?

Clearly I'm not missing much by not having any cell phones. They just rot the brain!

I'll tell you what would help. If people would leave Android alone and stop with this interface nonsense. Google do it better and if you want to tweak it there are loads of launchers anyway.

True, but manufacturers need to leave their mark don't they. If I don't get on with Samsung's effort, I'll just root it and install cyanogen.

I'm so glad I've gone back to a Nexus device. I had a Nexus One then a HTC Sensation. The Sensation was impressive at the time for its power but the Galaxy Nexus is so much better. I'm never getting a non-Nexus device again. Even things like the address book and the sms app are far superior. I did have the original Samasung Galaxy and the Samsung interface was horrible. At least HTC Sense is a better than that.

If you're referring to the S1, then past tense is more appropriate. The new TouchWiz is a lot less intrusive and more Androidy than the older versions. Still, I go for handset more than OS, since handsets can be rooted and have whichever OS you like on them.

I'm very much into smart phone tech, and even I found myself thinking "it's just a fucking phone".
On the plus side, knowing that...

They're required to do this, so don't judge them too harshly.
...makes it slightly less creepy. Still, it doesn't change the fact that there are actual customers out there actually acting like this without any hit of irony or sarcasm. And I have to wonder why? The iPhone 5 is nothing more than a spec bump with a slightly taller screen and minor cosmetic changes. It's not hugely different than the 4s, or even the 4. The only reason I'd feel the need to get one is because Apple is forcing me to do so if I want turn by turn navigation in their currently shitty maps app, or want to have access to the nearly useless novelty that is Siri. These people are freaking out over a phone who's major difference from what they currently got is that it can open apps a quarter of a second faster than what they could before.
I have a love/hate relationship with Apple. On one hand, I find the build quality of their products to be second to none, well designed, and rarely problematic (barring shitty maps). I've used Android phones before. I found some of them to be pretty decent, but I have yet to see one that's
quite as good overall as the iPhone. Plain and simply, they do make great stuff, and have earned their near sterling reputation in that regard.
On the other hand, Apple is about the most petty and jealous company on the face of the earth. You have to be a huge asshole to make Microsoft look like the good guys. But Apple? Oh, they do it. And do it well. Consistently. On top of that, you've got their fanbase, who are about the scariest group of people to congregate together this side of Westboro Baptist. I mean how seriously can you take a company that makes computers? I guess if you throw around adjectives like "revolutionary", "magical", "life changing" enough, people start believing it. Keep at it, and you're going to have kids firebombing Microsoft stores because they're the
deeevvviiillll.
So yeah, I buy Apple products because they're good, but I also feel like I'm singing up for a cult every time I do so.

Received my Galaxy S3 on Saturday. Liking it so far. Will reserve judgement for when the new toy effect is no longer tainting my appraisal of it.

Not had an Android phone to compare it with?
If you search the Tech help there is a thread in there with a lot of app recs I made some time ago.
