Forgot to mention:
Glyder* a nice and smooth flying game. With a surprizing scope (in the full version at least): you can glide from island to island and up above the clouds.. I always have trouble putting it down.

So it turns out fancy 3D games aren't the most fun, or at least those with demos aren't.
The best apps so far (obviously) are Brian Eno's, but I was actually compelled to purchase a few moreāZen Bound, Spider, and Rolando; the fact that everything is $5 and under, and also that I get it instantly, is a dangerous draw. These games are all quite good, though I'm a bit surprised that the titles which are obviously professionally developed aren't showcased more. For example, I had no idea Lumines was out until I did a search on a whim (sadly, it turns out to be shitty). With Xbox you always know what the hit titles are going to be, but it seems with the App store I have to do a lot more digging.
Also, I bought this cool one for $.99 called Color - more of this MOMA-aesthetics-for-the-sake-of-it stuff would be great (and perfectly suited to this platform), but it doesn't look like there's too much out there.

Fancing some unashamed grinding?
(

A blatent Diablo clone, complete with the same character classes, dodgy story and grades of random loot drops, but it's quite a decent one. Even has atmospheric sounds which are similar to the earlier parts of the original Diablo soundtrack.
I do have some issue with the responsiveness of the controls (a choice of on screen virtual pad or touch + walk), but it's well worth a look if Diablo is your thing.

FWIW, the iPhone version of Beneath a Steel Sky has now been released. :D

Great Scott, so it has!
£2.99, although there's no way it was a cost-free port. (And it's been 'remastered')

Man oh man what a pleasant surprise the Spider was. It's so cute and fun and has nice music.

Enviro-Bear 2010 is surely the Game of the Year (non-iphone people can download it (
http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/enviro-bear-2000/files/enviro-bear-2000/download/211/233/) here).
Drop 7's a challenging sudoku/tetris mashup, Dropship's fun (and free, and I like how the survivors are named after my contacts), Spore and Ragdoll Blaster are both cheap and relatively diverting. Katamari's pretty disappointing—it controls alright, but it's so
empty—not recommended for $4.99.
And Bloom just got a substantial update, which makes the best app on the store even better.
There are also a few games I've been eyeing, but they're expensive so I'm not sure if I should buy. Anyone played Doom Resurrection? It looks satisfying, and tailored especially for iPhone, but it's $6.99, and once I start letting myself buy
those apps, I know my credit card's gonna be stretching. Also, Real Racing, which gets high praise, but the actual gameplay videos still make it look finicky and awkward, like every other iPhone racer. How does it compare, control wise, to Fast 'n Furious, or Volkswagen Sirroco? Also, there's a COD clone called Modern Combat that looks entertaining, but $6.99 I'd like to be sure of it.

I wasn't too happy with Doom, so I wouldn't recommend it. Doom3 on rails with weirdo controls, zombies manifest out of thin air an inch behind your back constantly, etc. And it's a bit expensive compared to other iPhone games.

Control wise it is similar to Fast 'n Furious, same developer. It feels slightly more solid. Compared to other platforms it is still finicky and awkward, like most action games are on the iPhone. But up to a point you do get used to it.
If you're into racing simulation it's currently the best out there.
On the topic of racers, I had a blast playing Need for Speed Underground. It is more arcade oriented and a bit on the easy side. Fun nonetheless.

I'm trying to figure out if this is a complaint against Doom itself or a complaint against iPhone Doom.
