After id Tech 3 GPL source code was released to the public, a lot of new games were born. Alienarena is an example, and the success of OpenArena was huge! Do you think it's possible to make a Thief-like game or mod, like the Dark Mod?

I'm certain it's possible, but I have no idea what modifications would have to be written in. Usually these things lack the correct lighting and shadows, don't have anything like rope or lightgems, the AIs need adjusting for correct Thief-style behaviors, and sound propagation needs tweaking. Don't know about water or particle effects.
I also can't say how much work would be involved and that alone could put everybody off. It would have to show such promise and give the modders freedoms from certain burdens, you know, excite them enough to give it a go.

They're already using iD tech 4 for it, in the form of The Dark Mod. Now we just have to wait till the source gets released to the public, which iD software does with all of it's older engines, i.e. Doom and iD tech 1, 2 and 3.
iD tech 4 seems to be better for a Thief-like game, because it lets you build environments with a lot of atmosphere, just look at Doom 3.

Why would you want a Thief game for id Tech 3 when so much work has already been done using id Tech 4 (TDM)? You know the source will eventually be released (probably this year). Just seem pointless to even consider a whole new effort with an engine one extra generation behind.

Of course it's possible, but it would require starting from scratch...just like we did.
There are already some id tech 3 engines that have some great lighting/shadow enhancements, but that's barely scraping the surface.
Be patient, TDM will be along soon and when the idtech 4 source code is released, it will be fully open source and maintainable.

Releasing updates showing off the progress you've made (and when you point out the shared images/videos are outdated from where the team is really at) washes away any impatience and makes me want you to take as much time as life will allow.
