A friend of mine played TDS on his XBox but was never tempted for a moment to borrow my TDP & TMA for his PC - said he didn't think Thief was that great of a game unless you were a pre-teen.
Well, if he played the previous games...he would certainly find out different. :)

Somehow I doubt it. Simply because the game CONCEPT doesn't change. It's a lot of details that were changed, but I'm not sure if this would be enough to sway somebodies opinion if he doesn't like the game concept.
Maybe it is...

My friend's major complaint was that TDS seemed too easy, even on the most difficult setting (he also made mention of the fact that he wasn't a five yr. old & didn't need the loot to glint at him from across the room). I told him he was jaded and needed to try one of the previous Thief games. I've almost got him convinced & won't give up til he gives TDP or TMA a try (although I can't keep him in this headlock forever). He sounded more interested when I told him that Thief DP & MA are nowhere near as linear as TDS.

It's the PHILOSOPHY that changed. That is the disease of which the details, as some call them, are only a symptom. Dark Engine Thief and TDS are totally different, even if they have some superficial similarities.

Just off topic (hasn't the whole thing already done that anyway) but, i am now on my 5th mission in TDS and...well...it just isn't as much fun as i thought...the demo mission was so much fun but...those fish people piss me off so much! I think i'm gonna finish it, then go back to TMA...

You're always going to get newcomers to a game that won't be interested in the older ones. Hell, I may not have played the two older versions if I'd just come when III was released, simply because older games in general don't interest me (I like realistic graphics and as nice as those were in Thief back than, obviously they can't compare to how things look now). I really don't see why the scar is getting picked on so badly. I, for one (perhapes the ONLY one here) like it. Games grow, they change, and they evolve - it happens all the time.
I also prefer Garrett without the cape. He's a thief for crying out loud - not a damn super hero. I'd imagine the cape would give him away more as he slipped through shadows.

Well, there is an even easier answer than that. There was an interview with Warren or Harvey, I can't remember which, before the game came out. In this interview, they explain the selection process of the subtitle...they said, "It sounded cool". I'm pretty sure it was Warren.
It sounds like they chose a 'cool' title and then just validated it by tossing it into the story somewhere. Deadly Shadows doesn't really sound cool at all though.
UGH!. .changing an aspect of a story or art just because it's "cool" can be one of the WORST things to do ever!
And I hate that scar on Garrett's face. Like others have said, the way Viktoria plucked out his eye would not have left a scar like that and it's inconsistent with how he looked in Thief 2, anyway. Now how to explain the metal eye thing in the third game to those who haven't played the first two? Simple. . .remember in the opening animation when they show all those clips from the cutscenes of the first two games really fast? They could just have that one cutscene part where it clearly shows Viktoria yanking out his eye. Problem solved.

Hell, just Viktoria's hand yanking out his eye, don't show anything else...gives away just that little bit too much.

I had to check a few cutscenes in TDS, and Garrett has NO scar. Another reason we can not take what Ion Storm shovels as gospel for anything. One more reason there is a consistency error that NH was talking about. Making up a reason for something does not make it fact. May John P be praised for making a texture of Garrett without a scar to fix the story.
