I searched around, but none of the answers seemed concrete.
It's blasphemy I know, but I've never played Thief 1. So, when I saw (
http://www.eidosinteractive.com/games/info.html?gmid=34) this I jumped to buy it. Until I noticed it was labeled as Thief - The Dark Project. The FAQ here claims it's Thief Gold and going to the download page seems to support that. (The download is called THIEFGOL....EXE)
So, which is it, if anyone else has bought it?
(Also, if you have bought it this way and it IS in fact TG, are there any major problems using modifications with it?)
If it's The Dark Project only, there are ebay and amazon copies to buy, but this would be more convenient.
Thanks!

Thief: The Dark Project was a 12 mission campaign released in 1998.
Thief Gold came out in 1999 which was the same 12 missions as thief:TDP with 3 extra missions along with it.
There are a few other changes here and there to the original levels, but not a whole lot that's too major. I've played both numerous times. If I had to choose one or the other to play, and throw the other away, i'd choose Thief Gold, but.... there are some levels where I prefer the original version. they're pretty cheap, you could get both, and see for yourself.
but, in short: they are the same, except TG is a more recent/upgraded version of TDP with 3 extra missions.

Gold has more content and some fixes, but the original is the more cohesive experience. I would go for that.

Just get both! :D

Sigh, I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I know the difference between the two.
I'm asking which one that particular link is because there is contradicting info. The page claims it's TDP, but the download is called THIEFGOL....EXE. The FAQ here at ttlg says it's Gold.
But, why would you say the original is more 'cohesive'?

I've never downloaded it, so I cannot tell you with 100% certainty.
but.... given that it says "12 treacherous missions" and not "15 treacherous missions" my guess would be it's TDP.
If it isn't TDP, then they blew it. That's all I can tell you.

and I would agree that TDP was more cohesive.
It's totally possible that I feel this way only because it is what I played first. Sort of like how your favorite recording of a piece is often the one you heard first. (I got thief TDP in 1998 (4th grade) and so it was what I grew up with. I didn't play TG until several years later.)
I'll give you my 2 cents trying as best I can not to give anything away:
I would say, as much fun as the 3 added levels were, they really didn't seem necessary. (one of them in particular, which actually seemed to distract from the flow of the story) And, IMO one level (I think I can say that it was TDP level #7 without ruining anything) from TDP was significantly worsened by TG changes. Do others agree with this? or is it just me?
Having said that, though, TG is as much a part of thief lore as TDP, and i would strongly recommend, as others before me have, that you play both.

I really couldn't say but that's a high price considering all 3 games can be had for about $14 dollars on Amazon. snip
$14+$7 shipping. Eidos is still cheaper - I already have the other games. ;)
I think I'll just grab the one from Eidos, and then see which one it is and play it. Maybe I'll play the other in the future.

By the way, the one from the link I posted IS in fact Thief Gold.
