I just got done playing through the game on normal, always in 3rd person. It was very easy, but some parts took so long to get through that I decided not to bump it up any higher or I'd never see the end of the game :P.
I'm replaying soon, but I'm considering playing exclusively in first person because it looks to me that it's much more difficult.

It is more difficult, and it is (if I may say so) the RIGHT way to play Thief.
The two previous games were both in first person, and in Thief III, first person is far more immersive, difficult, and flat out more fun. Make sure to bump up the difficulty as well - Expert's the ideal one, but even then some find it too easy.
If you really want a challenge, try installing The Minimalist Project (if you're on a PC). In addition to changing a bunch of things to match the previous games better, all A.I is ramped up even above Expert.

I'd say it actually doesn't affect difficulty that much. Since the AI in TDS is so easy, you can simply peek around the corner. Hell, you can walk around the corner and back, and usually the AI won't notice. No need for the side-step, either. One could argue that first-person is easier because you only have to control Garrett, you don't have to control Garrett AND the camera.
Either way, first-person is the better experience.

I was trying to play third person just for fun, and I found it very annoying and frustrating. In my opinion its more dificult, but only because of the playability.
Anyway, I prefer first person. Personally I don't find more dificult, but more interesting.

Is playing in 3rd person cheating?
There is only one answer. Yes!
New Horizon on 28/3/2006 at 19:09
For a game like Thief, it is definately cheating.

I grew very frustrated trying to play TDS in the third person! I switched back to first person when I realized that my Garrett was starting to swerve and swagger around like Benny because I wasn't used to playing third pers. It looked pretty ridiculous. I agree that TDS is much more immersive when playing in the first person. I don't think playing in the third person is cheating, just can't figure out why you'd want to.

Hmm, the minimalist project's homepage seems to be dead, and fileshack has horrendous queues, as usual... But I think I'd rather play on expert because, as a thief newbie, it should prove plenty hard for me.

I would define cheating as using bugs in the game engine for an unintended advantage, such as elevatoring, banner transmigration, hiding until the AI forgets you were ever there, or the bow upgrade. Since 3rd person is an intentional feature of T3 intended to appeal to a wider audience I don't think it counts as cheating. I'm not even sure that it offers any advantages. :weird:
Someone gave me Tomb Raider II years ago but I quit playing because, among other things, I had trouble seeing in front of me with Lara always in the way.

Let's bash third person some more ...
