I will only play in 3rd person since I 'discovered' it in the Cradle the first time I played through Thief III. Some parts I feel are harder because you're looking down on Garrett, as opposed to right from his eyes. It's deffinetly harder to use a weapon (save for the arrows) in 3rd person.

There is no RIGHT or WRONG way to play Thief. I mostly play in first person because it's what I'm most familiar with but I sometimes find it necessary to switch to 3rd when judging the distance of a jump, per se.
And I don't give a rat's ass about what other thief players think of me if I do play it in 3rd. Do what you want, it's your game.

Dia might be right, so I can not help thinking the poor third person bashers might play like a drunken Benny as stated before. First person ends up required to play good and avoid being embarrassed. I guess I am lucky to take pride in being able to play with first or third person well :p

I grew very frustrated trying to play TDS in the third person!
Don't know about that. But the only tmie I switched to third person was, when I got stuck in some object and tried to prevent reloading. Third person strangely helped so I was glad I had it, though I must say that I never gto stuck somewhere in the original games.
Needless to say that I played the game in first person exclusively, except in the beginning where I was merley curious about the model. So I switched sometimes to third person just for fun, but nor for playing.
One other issue where it also makes sense to use third person, is when using the climbing gloves. the view is so limited, that it's practically useless.

I don't think playing in the third person is cheating, just can't figure out why you'd want to.
Simply, because if you switch to third person, you can easily look around corners without getting exposed, which IS cheating to me.

That may compensate for the slower lean etc and lack of scouting orb. Gimme a scouting orb and i'll be happy, but if i'm gonna have custom skins, i wanna see them as well...
So, cheating; maybe. If you had a scouting orb or some other similar tool and a faster lean, definitely.

To me, Ion Storm made one very nice and totally optional 3d mode for T3.
And for filling "market needs and wants" this is an excellent example!
So don't think of this 3d-view as a cheat, but as a better way to sell a game.
And I'll take that quick 3d-view over that slow leaning FPS-view, anytime!
Also I was really impressed with that natural T3 FPS view-switching from 3d into his arrow-shooting mode. So much so, that I want to suggest this to our Postal2 modifiers, who are currently being pressured into some sort of 3d-view by a lot of our newer players and even some of the older ones.

Of course it's a good marketing ploy, but it's a complete betrayal of the Thief gameplay concept. You're not supposed to be able to see that much of your surroundings in this type of game. I respect your opinion, and they did do a great job implimenting Third Person, but they did so at the expense of the 'CORE' gameplay mechanics. First person in TDS is worse than third person. Third person wasn't even supposed to be in the game, one of the developers supposedly put it in without prior authorization but won Warren over with the 'cool' factor. At least Deus Ex had the good sense to remain a first person only game.
I'll tell you this much, from the results of both of those games, it certainly doesn't seem like there was very strong leadership behind the curtains. Programmers going off and rewriting the rendering engine without approval, hacking in third person without approval. Just doesn't sound like a team working 'together' to me.
I don't mean to imply that 'all' of the devs were like that, but it only takes a few 'hot shots' to send things spiraling out of control.

When I let my friend borrow T3 to try it out (he'd never played any thief games) he talked about how he loved the game so much. I went over to watch him play it and got really annoyed when he refused to play it in any way but 3rd person.
I told him he didn't know what he was missing out on. Third person is the reason that Resident evil wasn't remotely scary in it's day...
Thief is a first person game, as it shall ever be. It's just not as immersive...
I'd rather BE Garrett than WATCH Garrett.

On the other hand, TDS looks a bit better from 3rd person because then you're usually further away from those low-resolution wall textures.
The story was that "that guy" hacked 3rd person into the game on his own time. That's sort of commendable. However, "that guy" totally missed the point that 1st person is essential to the Thief experience. Then Warren, and ultimately the whole team made the same mistake. If I ever find out who "that guy" is, I swear I'll ... continue shaking my fist at the ceiling in helpless frustration.

Heh heh, in a lot of circumstances 'his own time' usually means, company time. Unless the guy stole the dev tools and worked from home, he would have had to work at this on his coffee breaks, or after hours. I don't see either of those scenarios happening. He did it on the company dime. ;)
