Hey dema that link was pretty cool, but it shows one thing - so hard to emulate someones vibrato.

It's interesting when a guitarist tries to emulate another one ... not only do they not perfectly capture it, but their own sound inevitably comes out too. Only example I can think of offhand though is Kevin Eubanks, because he's always playing covers every night, but you can always hear his style in them (which isn't really my taste).
@Neb, your selection reminds me of Atari Teenage Riot.

Soreption sound a bit like (

Black Sabbath tend to be quoted as on of the original metal bands, although the heaviness was there with Hendrix. What I know was inherited from my dad as he had Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zep - Zeppelin was probably the only "heavy" stuff he liked particularly.
Still working through the suggestions...

Oceansize. Their "Music for Nurses" EP* is a good 25min overview with both subtle and very intense sections which never really become something I'd call metal. It's really my favourite. Aside from that, I like most of their stuff for its elegant complexity. I don't know if the EP is available in American YouTube; in Germany you can only get the single songs and the (

* Not to be confused with the song "Music for a Nurse" from their second album.

Opeth is halfway to progressive rock, especially with the Blackwater Park album. With that in mind I'd recommend the following albums by Porcupine Tree which go far more in a heavy rock direction:
* In Absentia
* The Incident (their most recent album)
In Absentia being the better of the 2 albums. The lead singer's (Steve Wilson) only solo album "Insurgentes" is moderately heavy also.
I'm quite picky when it comes to heavy metal. Love the guitar and drum stuff in the majority of it, but if I can't make out what their singing about then I tend to not like it. Opeth's pretty good on the overall whole however.
Oh and give "Lamb of God" a try. Saw them in concert (with a metal fanatic mate who dragged me along for it), and they were pretty damn good.
