My band supported Oceansize way back. I'd have called them prog more than heavy.
Lucky you. I saw them shortly before their split-up when they were still carrying their equipment from the stage before PT played. Made them even more likable to me. Sadly, making music would fit nowhere in my schedule nowadays. For me Oceansize touched the atmospheric aspects of Post Rock without being dragged away by its own complacency. And when I can have complicated time signatures or polyrhythm that still sounds elegant, I'm sold.
I was recently pointed to (

The best songs from
A Perfect Circle aren't really that hard but I put them in the same category because they're bleak like that (IMO). They're not exactly an obscure band though.
And by the same extension Tool (same lead singer and similar sound).

Although Tool do have one heavy song per album.
Undertow - Intolerance (or arguably Flood)
Aenima - Hooker With a Penis
Lateralus - Ticks & Leeches
10,000 days - Rosetta Stoned

Hm. Heavy, not-metal, odd time signatures:

That was awesome. Thanks.

(

We've got blast beats, shredding, changing time signatures, excursions into something a bit "progressive" - not for too long but enough to give one a break from the intensity.

I hope you can handle screaming. Between the Buried and Me are fantastic, and this song sold me on them. Especially once it hits 6:35.

Give it a try, and don't let the screaming kill it for you if that's a turn-off.
