I was reminded of this game while posting about Bioshock and now that I'm finished that and I've played SS2, I figure since this Thief franchise seems to be related (at least on this forum) I should re-visit this game.
I never actually played Thief II but I do have it. According to Game Rankings the Thief 1 was released in 98' (kind of old and might not even work on XP pro like SS2) and I don't have it but... do these games have a story arc to them or are they all just different?

It's a trilogy. All three games are playable on XP, but some people have more problems than others, and some people have no problems. The three games are different experiences, but the main story arcs across all three, and there are subplots that run through. I'd recommend starting from the beginning, especially if you like to pay attention to the virtual world you inhabit.
And remember: you're a thief--silent, sneaky--not an assassin, though killing comes into play here and there. You take it slowly, hiding, waiting, creeping, diverting attention FROM yourself. If you like the idea, and can appreciate the storylines, reading every readable, you'll get--at minimum--a kick out of it.:thumb:
I played Thief 2 first, because it came with a friend's new soundcard. When it was over, I HAD to have answers to my questions. That need led me to TTLG, and eventually I got to play Thief 1. Now I own and have played through Thief (1) Gold, Thief (2): The Metal Age, and Thief (3): Deadly Shadows.

Yeah I just seen that thief gold has all updated stuff and three new levels so maybe it won't be so dated as to be distracting AND actually work on XP pro.

Well, it's not really updated. It's tweaked and has the extra levels, but the only real difference in appearance will be how your modern system renders it. There are things you can do to make it look a little better by loading in the fan-made tweaks and such. But I hope the dated graphics don't turn you away from the gameplay, atmosphere, and story!

I reloaded Quake 2 on the weekend and the blurry graphics really hurt my eyes. It was also frustrating that you can't use the mouse to look up and down, only left and right.

It's a good thing Thief isn't like that!:eww:
If Thief's blurry, it's the monitor, or the player needs glasses.:weird:
I love mouse-look.

I recommend regular Thief I. Thief Gold added some new material - but most of it is fairly questionable. I certainly think the story is less tight because of its changes.

Most of the new material is outstanding. Thief Gold is a must, if you can find it.
And yeah, I'd play it before Thief 2. The stories are sequential.

Thief Gold added more that connected it to Metal Age, too.

Quake 2 had full mouse look.
Thief 1 is pretty old by now but you quickly get used to it. The main thing is that it's gameplay and controls are still pretty much superior to almost all current games, so you're all set in that category.
