I advise to start with Thief 1, dp or gold

I recommend regular Thief I. Thief Gold added some new material - but most of it is fairly questionable. I certainly think the story is less tight because of its changes.
I agree with Melan here; my own analysis of story elements have convinced me that thief gold was much more hastily put together, despite subtle references to Thief 2. The briefing movies are probably the most revealing proof of this. But the more missions the better, I say nonetheless.

If you play Thief 2 first, and then play Thief 1, you'll probably wish you'd played Thief 1 first.

I reloaded Quake 2 on the weekend and the blurry graphics really hurt my eyes. It was also frustrating that you can't use the mouse to look up and down, only left and right.
Enable freelook. :D

yeah it's only Quake 1 that has mouse troubles. And Doom of course, but then that didn't really have up and down as much anyway.

I have to admit that I played Thief II first. It didn't make a huge difference to how much I enjoyed the game, but I would recommend playing Thief I first, as otherwise the plot gets a little confusing. I spent part of my initial game saying 'who the hell is that?', 'what's a pagan?', etc

Quake 1 had mouselook as well, but you had to type "mouselook 1" in the command console to activate it, iirc.

Nevermind. Play Thief Gold first, if you can get it. It should work fine on most modern computers after some twitching and it really is the best place to start playing the trilogy (you _will_ want to play them all, trust me). The graphics aren't that different from Thief Metal Age and actually quite beautiful.
