Nevermind. Play Thief Gold first, if you can get it. It should work fine on most modern computers after some twitching and it really is the best place to start playing the trilogy (you _will_ want to play them all, trust me). The graphics aren't that different from Thief Metal Age and actually quite beautiful.
Among other things, Thief II doesn't really have a training mission, does it? It's nice to get some practice with the controls before plunging in. Not to mention shooting some hoops.

The first four levels are the training. The first level is very easy and short. The objectives are designed to get you used to the basics. But otherwise, no...there is no Training level.

I thought the text tips only appeared in the first 2 missions? Then again, I've never played Thief 2 on normal so I could be wrong. Unless those tooltips aren't what you meant by the training?

Sorry. I meant the first three. Framed is numbered "4" but it's actually the third map. You still get tips in Framed, like how to lockpick the first door you come to. The mission itself is designed to force the majority of players to swim.

Yes, it has that, but what I meant was there's no mission where you're basically allowed to learn the interface without any in-game consequences. If someone's not really used to this genre of game, that's pretty useful, I think. I can't really judge how good the early Thief II missions are for that since I already was familiar with the style of play and the controls by then.

:p
I stepped into the Thief Universe through Metal Age first. Then I had to go get TDP to get the rest of the story. Eventually I got Gold and TDS. So those first missions trained me before I ever stepped virtual (and invisible) foot into a Keeper Compound.:thumb:
