Not overzealous at all. People who work with/around firearms are all trained to be extremely procedural and deliberate in their use of firearms. In the military even swinging your barrel in a direction so that the line of fire crosses someone else when it's loaded with blanks or even unloaded will get you an ass chewing.

Nobody (aside from a crackpot contingent) is really worried about how the military, police officers, or skilled hunters are handling guns, at least in terms of avoidable accidents. Obviously it's the morons with guns & without training, or flat-out criminals, that we're worried about.

I've never met anyone who truly believes that everyone in the world should be able to own a firearm. Where we may differ is exactly how much control is acceptable, but the idea that some people cannot be trusted to own and use them responsibly is something we can all agree on.
