From what I've seen of the video footage, he was shot dead moments after he opened fire on 2 of the hostages.

One of my friends is a barrister who works close to that shop and was freaked out for a while because of early rumors circulating that this might be a plot targeting courts or the legal system somehow. I think everyone will maybe feel a little better knowing it was just a lone nutter trying to go out with a bang, and not an attack planned by ISIS, Al Qaeda, et al.
Who starts shit like that? It was the same thing in Ottawa. Everyone in the downtown core somehow thought they were going to end up dead from all the various rumors. The news was reporting up to 3 individuals were involved, and somehow our own government thought and was putting out internal directives that said there were up to 5.

(
http://www.radiolab.org/story/outside-westgate/) Shit does get weird in crisis situations
At the appearance of a possible jihadist at work the government did push the button on response plans for it being the start of something bigger. But I think they cooled it off a few hours later.

She has no idea who started the rumors, but I guess that shop was frequented by barristers who work in the area (and there is a large firm nearby). Sadly, one of the innocents killed was a professional colleague or at least acquaintance of hers.
