To the above posters, I don't think it's destruction for the sake of destruction. Just as in Saudi Arabia there's two deliberate purposes for what they're doing. The first is the control of the knowledge. They deliberately want to make sure that nobody can study those old relics and consequently learn from them. A second is power: they want to scrub any symbolism or imagery other than those they directly control and further cement their ideas into tpehe minds of people living under their control. People are supposed to literally forget that any alternative ideas exist. It has been done everywhere in history by the ruling faction. The original Christian church scrubbed most over Pagan imagery out of society so that people wouldn't be reminded those old ideas existed, "heretic" factions did the same thing when they pushed the Roman church out, and more recently Atheistic factions did the same to the protestant icons in areas they controlled.
That does make a lot of sense. I still can't get over how they have no concept of beauty or appreciation for culture (or for that matter, how they're willing to torture, rape, and murder innocent people just for the fun of it). It's especially disturbing, as many of them have university degrees and a decent education from what I've heard

They probably have plenty of appreciation for culture, if it's the right one.

Since you're clearly an idiot, I'm going to give you some homework: Go look up "collateral damage". Don't come back until you understand the difference between that and
intentionally destroying non-military targets. Also note that the reason modern militaries invest so heavily in precision-guided munitions is to avoid collateral damage as much as possible.
I think you're the idiot if you truly believe any of this. And if you think collateral damage is acceptable and justifiable, you're not just a complete idiot, you're also a huge soulless asshole. When was the last time America received a bomb on its soil again? What's that? They never did? That sure makes it easy to talk about collateral damage. I'm sure you wouldn't mind using those precision-guided munitions to hunt your criminals then. Or do you mean they're not that precise?

Sure.....because America destroying some cultural relics 100 years ago totally justifies what ISIS is doing now. While we're at it I think we should re-institutionalize slavery in the rest of the World because it's not as bad as what America did.
Funny how you focused on the "100 years ago" part and not the "last 15 years" part. My point is not to defend or excuse ISIS, my point is, whatever ISIS is guilty of is insignificant compared to the crimes perpetuated by the US army on a daily basis.

Here's a hint for you: it's not just America. It includes France and a whole bevy of Middle Eastern states.
That is precisely what I was implying. So instead of complaining that some terrorist group is acting crazy, maybe we start by making sure that terrorist group doesn't exist in the first place?

Jesus, really? Do you have a citation for that? It's a pretty bold statement.
Tony_Tarantula on 11/3/2015 at 18:59
I doubt that, especially if you compare "pro capita" war crimes. I used to work with those guys and the guys who were actually in the military would generally get skewered if there was even a shred of doubt that they'd killed someone needlessly.....although I should add the disclaimer that this was post-Bush. Generally the worst behavior came from the guys who worked for PMCs(who more than lived up to the flaming douchebag meathead stereotype perpetuated by Army of Two).

He's not so much bold as he is a foot-stamping dimwit who can't tell the difference between deliberate and incidental/accidental destruction.

And he's obviously got a huge grudge against the US of A.

I believe it was sometime around 2001.

Or 1941 before that. While you could argue that both of these were easily preventable by US intelligence/military if they'd really wanted to the fact remains that someone else "pulled the trigger" in those events.
Between all the idiocy he's got one almost point: ISIS did come into existence because we in the West wanted to get rid of Assad and we armed literally everyone to do it. The reason i say "almost" is because a lot of the countries that Manwe approves of were also complicit in that.

A lot of members of the "moderate" factions that were armed by the West (Free Syrian Army) have defected to IS

The following article from The Atlantic (March 2015) by Graeme Wood spells it out very clearly "What ISIS Really Wants".
(
http://www.theatlantic.com/features/archive/2015/02/what-isis-really-wants/384980/)
Its tag line:
"The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it is a key agent of the coming apocalypse. Here’s what that means for its strategy—and for how to stop it."
It is Islam, or more accurately their version of it, that commands them to rape, pillage, enslave infidels, and yes… destroy artifacts that are contrary to their teaching. To not do this is a sin to them. This is not about a bunch of "boys" being nihilists. It is about radicals acting as their teaching commands, or better yet demands. There are so many parts to this, I will not bore you with the list and my interpretations. Please read the article instead. A warning though, it is very long. Those that get their news from Twitter or MSNBC (or FOX News for that matter) may need to take many breaks...
