Uh, no. You just have to tweak the settings more to your liking.
allowoversaturation=0 already goes a long way.

People with low spec machines can save big bucks by taking lots of cheap internet amphetemines for pupil dilation and smearing their eyeballs with vaseline.
Works great in real life too!
Not to be done while operating heavy machinery, shopping for light fittings or cross country skiing in above the arctic circle

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've never seen bloom in real life. Flare, yes. Bloom, no.
The only possible legitimate use of bloom that I can think of is simulating foggy conditions, but even there it's a poor substitute for volumetric lighting.

I guess it's used to simulate having some sort of genetic eye defect. At least the way it's used in 95-100% of the tech demos/games I've seen so far.

Heh heh, dat looks familiar. Didn't the last discussion on this go
seriously off track the last time? I remember rose petals, for some reason. Ah ZB, where are ya man!?

i also think bloom is something to be enjoyed, regardless of how overdone it is

I remember the first time I played Lost Coast after finally upgrading my machine to a card that could do HDR.
I thought it was very realistic looking, just like the way your eyes react to the sun after you've been in a dark room. I've never clumped HDR and bloom together as the same effect.
heywood on 16/11/2008 at 17:22
Agreed. You can implement bloom without HDR (e.g. Invisible War) and HDR can improve a lot of things other than bloom, particularly details in very dark areas.
EvaUnit02 on 16/11/2008 at 17:34
Hey, I never said that they were the same thing or mutually exclusive. You get the bloom when a cvar called r_HDRrendering is enabled in Far Cry.
heywood on 16/11/2008 at 17:39
OK, true enough. Were there any instances where the patch actually improved the lighting?
