Even getting feedback here isn't foolproof - there's quite a few TTLGers that will sing Deadly Shadow's praises. But that said, I'll still put a lot more stock into opinions here than anywhere else.
The people around here are probably the best place to get an idea of the quality of the game, though it'll still require some legwork on your part to figure out if its right for you. Between the less exacting, but still critical people up in gengaming, and the hardcore contingent down here in Thiefgen, you'll get a good idea of both how good it is overall, and how good of a Thief game it is specifically.

Well if they can't be bothered to put a real copy in a real box for sale then I can't be bothered to play it.
Oh well, I hope its enjoyable for those who will.

Is that really the deal breaker for you?
I do find it a bit odd that there won't be a boxed version, and I too would have liked to buy it on DVD, but I suppose I can live with the digital version.
That's the least of my worries concerning the new Thief, actually.

Yes it is. I like to own a hard copy of the intellectual property that I consume. I know that opinion is becoming more and more antiquated but it's the one I hold. And if I and others like me ever expect to be able to still get stuff in that manner then we have to vote with our wallets.
Plus they seem to have no trouble in wanting to cash in on Thief merchandise...kind of hard to sell a digital version of a T-shirt right..
I have trouble handing the money that I worked so hard to steal from Lord Fattyfatso to a company that can't be bothered to furnish the game in the time honored manner because my business isn't important to them.

Oh, they're easy enough to sell...they're just impractical.

I prefer a hard copy myself. It's frustrating that we live in a society where nothing's permanent anymore, everything is transient, cheap and throwaway. CD's and DVD's are permanent (or at least will last decades). It annoys me that I can't burn my Skyrim copy on a dvd for backup and I have to keep it backed up on a removable hard drive (which is much less durable than a CD/DVD). If only they invented larger capacity DVD's...

You could back up your games to thumb drives or SD cards if you want longevity without as much fragility. The former is reliable for at least 10 years on a shelf, and the latter can supposedly last up to a century if you treat them right.
I'd trust both of them more than a DVD for long term storage.

I don't think it's because they can't bothered. And comparing it to a t-shirt is illogical. A t-shirt has physical function. If you have a boxed game and I have a digital only version we'll still play the same game.
Have you never bought any music online? Or any films or tv shows?
Esme on 21/1/2014 at 23:16
A lack of physical media isn't
the deal breaker for me it's just another entry on a list of deal breakers.

No, nor do I stream them from places like Netflix/LoveFilm, voting with my wallet FWIW

There's a lot to be said about the death of physical media; it's something people have been complaining about for the last decade, really. But let's be honest -- if it weren't for digital distribution, the indie games scene would not exist. If it weren't for Steam, PC gaming as a platform would be dead. If it weren't for Netflix, almost nobody under 50 would watch television. (I still watch shows as they air, but that's because I only watch
two shows, one of which is only on a few weeks per season apparently and the other seems to be winding down and will probably end in a year or two.)
The downside of this is things get more throwaway; the upside is that access has never been easier.
