But still not enthusiastic enough to open Dromed himself.
I have many great ideas for missions, but I understand that I cannot just throw these out and hope that someone will do one of them. It would be up to me to build. I have opened up Dromed and built very tiny things, like an octagonal cave and a simple room with no doors. It is daunting and much more complex than something like Visual Basic. I'm sure that if I followed the tutorials and spent a few weeks at it, I may be able to build a little mission that would take about 5 minutes to solve. An hour long play mission would probably take me months of full time work - a year or two if part time.
The complexity isn't just in the structure, number and placement placement of AI, and quantity and type of loot. There has to be a great story. The difficulty choices need to mean something (not in all cases, but generally true.) Puzzles need to be created. It just goes on. I can just feel the gears turning in the heads of Dromeders.
Almost every day, I threaten to try a mission, but I just don't pull that trigger. I look at the set of prior FMs and think that anything I do would simply suck by comparison. That is stink'en think'en , I know, but it is reality. I am not going to produce a "Black Frog" or "King's Story", for example. I might be able to produce a "Chuffy Train"
But then I think of the 48 hour contest and how so many interesting things were done in a tiny amount of time. It is possible. Not for me, but experienced people can push out a decent small mission in 2 days! That was impressive.
As for POTA? Meh. Unless it was satire, there would be copywriter issues, I would imagine. 3 types of apes would be needed and a huge number of number of objects. How would one make a whip? The water hose was already mentioned. A POTA theme would be OK, with civilized Ape Beasts, but a full blown redo of the series? Downrider, go for it!

I agree with Tannar. While I find downwinder's posts hard to read sometimes due to the complete lack of punctuation (aside from commas), I can't fault him for his enthusiasm or stream of ideas, and as was said he's not asking anyone to make missions for him, and even though he has no interest in learning how himself, that's fine. This place would be more boring if we didn't talk about things other than released (and upcoming) missions.
In short, chillax people.

So you guys basically saying that trash is better than nothing, right?
By the way, can anyone show me a mission, which was based on an idea that did not come from the mission author, but from some random guy?
FireMage on 17/4/2015 at 17:56
You got a point Tannar ;)
It's true that such thread create enthusiasm and activity. And that Downwinder have never asked someone to do it.
But I see people dreaming, ideas coming from everywhere, and it is very embarrassing because there are cool mission ideas overhere that needs to be developped and perhaps, released but we know that the most part of these missions will NEVER exist because nodoby will try to make it true from the beginning to the end. And this is very very frustrating to see such thing, don't you?
Imagining a good campaign, a perfect world, an amazing mission, but that you won't be able to play despite your enthusiasm.
And for a Map maker, the fact that we feel it like some kind of command is actually because we see players saying "Yes, I want to play such a mission. This is the best idea ever. I want to play a mission like this!", and in front of such sentances, I don't know if all map makers agree, but in my case yes.
I feel that people are asking such mission and because the ideas'author will never touch Dromed, from who they will expect such mission? The DromEders! :)
That's why I feel a bit commanded. I feel forced, people are saying they want this so I must do this...
It's wrong to think like this but this is what's happening in my mind when I see ideas that ask to become true but nothing is done... What a waste... :erg:

No, that's not what I'm saying. And frankly, I resent having words put in my mouth.
I'm saying that this kind of post is NOT trash. In fact, it's essential! Look at any truly thriving community and there will be some percentage of this kind of post. When you try to suppress this kind of thing, all you're doing is stamping out enthusiasm. If you continue on this road, you will exclude enough people that the community will die. You'll be left with a few bitter, self-important people who can't understand why none of the "good" people ever join their club. That kind of discrimination we can do without.

I didn't mean to sound harsh - I meant that it would be cool to have even more people working on FMs. To be honest I don't want my favorite pc game of all time to end ;)

A player with great ideas and no technical skill.
A player who is a seasoned dromedsmen who is struggling with a possible storyline.
Go ahead and discourage these expressions of ideas and you've prevented the next possible masterpiece from being created.

I'll repeat my previous question: can anyone show me a mission, which was based on an idea that did not come from the mission's author, but from some random guy?
So you consider these ideas great? These were barely ideas at all. All he said was that Thief would make a good PotA mission, because it has apes, and that's all. No thinking was put into this. It is like I'd say: I've been at a baseball match tonight, and I've got the best idea ever! Someone should make a baseball fan mission, because we have blackjack and it would serve as the baseball bat!!

I think the point that is trying to be made is not about the quality of the idea, but the freedom we all should have to throw out the occasional far-fetched middle of the night mission idea without it being such an event. We are small, dwindling forum. I had a fleeting thought of how Garrett got the piss out of his clothes after swimming through the sewers, when I have yet to see the first dry cleaner in a mission. Is it mission worthy? No. Was it just a goofy thought? Yes. Should I feel comfortable sharing it with my friends on here? Absolutely.
Let's face it, we're all just going through mission withdrawal.
