Eh, Blizzard always plays it safe with its franchises, little innovation in terms of gameplay.
What? Each successive Warcraft RTS instalment saw significant evolution over the last, ditto with Diablo 1 over 2. Starcraft 2 is the exception, since they can't afford to upset the lucrative South Korean e-sports business.

I think you'll usually find that evolution != innovation.

*sigh* Examples of innovation:-The hero system in WC3, runes in D2, etc. The WC3 hero system in particular spawned an entirely new RTS sub-genre that includes the DotA mod, Demigod and League of Legends.

I can't complain. As long as its been since I've last played any RTS, even the tried and true will practically seem a brand new and innovative experience to me. And anyway, even if it does end up being nothing more than Starcraft with slicked up graphics and better pathfinding, I still wouldn't have much to complain about. I loved SC1. More of the same, while admittedly a little disappointing, isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Though to their credit, I do imagine Blizzard has thrown a few neat surprises into the single player campaign to keep it from being being a glorified expansion come 12 years too late. Even if the core gameplay is somewhat similar, I'm sure there are alot of things that can be done within that framework now that couldn't be done back in the late 90's.

Oh I'm not resurrecting the whole 'what is innovation' flamefest again. But for the sake of argument: RTS games always had special units or, to wit, 'heroes'. The only thing new WC3 did with them was give them RPG stats and a level up button, something that you could argue turn-based strategy had already been doing for yonks.
And the runes in D2 were an innovation only if RPGs where all you did was click the left mouse button to hit someone were your sole exposure to the genre.

Yeah, instead of helping us fight off the hordes of bugs
Renzatic on 24/7/2010 at 19:35
Shut up! I asked you to play with Duck and I yesterday and you pussed out. Ain't got no bitchin room whatsoever, Toll.
Also he's gearing up for the big bug battle. Not this weiner 4 people vs. like 10 bugs battle you've all got a hard-on over. He's prepping for a bug-fucking-WAR, SON! WAR! :doublemad:

Duck told me he was preloading SC2 like 5 minutes before you came in, nerfherder! We already had a full squad by then too and I wasn't going to abandon them! YOU DON'T CUT AND RUN
Nameless Voice on 24/7/2010 at 20:20
What exactly is the point of preloading? The digital download version doesn't become available until 10:00 anyway. If you want to get it as soon as possible, you'll be faster to head to a shop early and buy a physical copy.
Me, I reckon since they'll probably be about the same price anyway, I'd like a boxed version.

Dated as in it does nothing new in the genre, or dated as in it feels like you're playing Starcraft 1 all over again? 'cause the former's always been a given, as Mr.D said.
Both. It feels like the original Starcraft, so it doesn't have any more advanced gameplay mechanics than were in Starcraft. I compare it to Company of Heroes, which has morale, varying accuracy at different ranges, vehicles and armor penetration, and terrain, and Starcraft II seems behind the curve. Every unit has just one or two attacks that always hit and do a certain amount of damage. It's less like a wargame and more like chess. I'm sure the hardcore tournament players will cream themselves over that comparison but I find the game far too simplistic.
