Hmm, I'm not impressed with the screenshots and gameplay vids, but for some reason I feel the urge to replay the original...

Personally I don't really understand why people rag on SC for "ripping off" Warhammer.
I started to play DoW and I wasn't that impressed to tell you the truth. Yeah, the graphics and special effects were way better (as they should be), and the gameplay was new and kind of interesting (and it did have a kick-ass intro cinematic), but the characters were completely uninteresting and the storyline was just plain BORING. If a game doesn't have an engaging plot I will ALWAYS loose interest (I never did finish the game).
Yeah, sure, Warhammer may be more original, but SC has a superior story and presentation. That will always make it "better" in my estimation.
sigh WH40K is more than just a single RTS game which someone may or may not enjoy (i was confused by it, but then again most RTS games get me lost)
go read some of the books, for example. i would recommend gav thorpe's "the last chancers", which is a collection of 3 books, actually.

Which was kind of my point, so ...?
Didn't know that Fafhrd, but it makes things clearer. Thanks.
So it's not exactly fair to be making a comparsion between a story set in a universe that had 20 years of backstory to draw from, and a story set in a universe that was drafted at the back of the envelope, for a single game.

In the one case people are complaining about too little being done to the original Starcraft formula, while in the other case people are complaining about too much being done to the original Fallout formula. Apples and oranges of course, just sayin'.
I imagine that's because the Starcraft formula is "Love it or hate it", while the Fallout one is, supposebly, "Love it or love it."
I'm not overly thrilled at the concept of 300-APM-to-do-anything that's prevelant in Starcraft, so I'll wait and see.

Maybe you could, like, define APM next time. Actions Per Minute. I had to look it up.

Maybe not, but then again it doesn't have to be.

I wish they would make an RTS where you issue orders like a real general would, ie This group of troops will go here and secure this resource node, orders are to retreat if they meet heavy resistance.
Then your troops toddle off and start building the resource collector, meet an enemy scout and kill it. Then some enemy tanks show up and they leg it back to base.
While they are doing this you can be issuing more orders and setting your research priorities etc.
Rather than the starcraft way of having all your troops wander off and kill themselves if you aren't carefull, and all requiring several orders in order to accomplish anything.
icemann on 23/5/2007 at 15:41
Well they do already have games like that. Their called Sim games (ala Civilization etc), where your troops do the fighting for you, and you simply manage the cities etc, and deal with the units again once the battle is done.

Not every RTS inflicts micromanagement hell on the player. Games like Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander are supposed to let the player issue high-level orders, then let the individual units accomplish them somewhat intelligently.
I only played Starcraft for the first time about a year ago, and it left me a little underwhelmed in the interface department. If I want to build some type of unit, I should be able to issue that order directly, dammit, not have to hunt down the specific building that makes them.

I think if the unit construction was done that way I would feel a little disconnected from my base.
