Well, after besting TDS, not wanting to jump right back into the start of the game again, it's still all too fresh . . . but, I do feel like taking a shot at doing my own mission . . . asides, I've been quite inspired by The Cradle (odd source of inspiration, huh?) . . . so, in my spare time here and there I'll be working on it, and this will mark the first map I've made for a game since HexenII, way back in the day. I am a bit curious, though . . . what type of Thief environment do you most prefer to go thieving in?

I prefer to go thieving in the city itself, difficult to make missions with loads of buildings but I most liked the south quarter and the docks from TDS. There more character in missions set in the poor areas of the city, in taverns etc.
Good luck wrestling with the editor (I’ve had my mission finished for ages but cant seem to find a bug which makes it crash!! Aaargh!)
And I don’t think the cradle is that odd a source of inspiration, it has been recognised as one of (if not the) best piece of level design in any game ever.

Don't bother with that line of thinking. Make the mission YOU want to make as that will help keep you focused and inspired to work! Good luck.

Yes, I agree, make the mission and we will play.
BTW, have you played the first two Thief games? Well worth the time if you haven't yet.

No doubt to that. I lost track of how many times I saved in that mission, simply because of the atmosphere. After completing the game, I looked at some of those walkthroughs here and there, and am so glad I didn't have to use them - it would've completely destroyed that mission (if not the whole game) knowing what was going to happen next.

Oh, most defi - I was just curious what kinds of missions others enjoyed more, y'know? Like me, for example, for some reason I've always prefered going through the Hammer temples . . . maybe it's all that open space, not sure. My idea right now, though is wanting to adapt a map I made for HexenII so long ago, but never finished . . . it would look and play great in T3, I think.

Yeah, yeah - absolutely great, they were. I bought TDP not long after it first came out (which is why I never bought Thief: Gold - couldn't reason with another $40 at the time only for a few new features), and I've still got the odly cut boxes they were packaged in from Eidos. Although, it's been almost a coupla years since I last played TMA . . . I've thought of going back through them again, as my computer now can load up any of the game missions from TDP or TMA in less than a minute (last time I played through either, with my old PC, it could take upwards of 5-10min - took about as long to save and load games, too - I got really good at Thief, simply because I didn't want the hassle of long load times, it was easier to stay alive :cheeky: ).
Concerning TDS, I do want to know, though . . . WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FRIGGIN ROPE ARROWS?!!! I gladly would've givin up those gloves to have rope arrows in my arsenal!!

I agree with the opinions expressed here. Build a mission the way YOU would like to play one. Its sort of like writing a story. You need to write something you enjoy and others will enjoy it too if only because they'll see your enjoyment in it. :)
Personally I prefer city and/or mansion style missions. Though I get terribly lost and confused in city areas. . .I still love them. I don't much care for undead missions (though I will play them and have enjoyed some. . .) so when I design missions. . .or mission? if I can ever get this building thing into my head. . .they will probably be varieties of city areas, or mansions or countryside areas without an undead in sight. Unless I have a logical reason why they should be there.
But that is me, and I don't expect other designers to feel the same way. Well, at least not all of them. :laff:
As for the rope arrows vs gloves. . .yes! I think a great many of us would be happy to ditch the gloves for our rope arrows again. Personally the ropes make more sense (if you can explain how a flimsy arrow into a piece of wood can support the weight of a man. . .I'd really like to know the idea behind that one!) than gloves that will attach to only certain types of wall, and allow him to scale like he's some sort of spider. Then again, Spiderman's wall climbing ability always failed to make sense to me as well. Logically speaking, of course. :)

Mansions in the evening mist/rain. In Thief 2, the level with the pagan being held captive by mechanists? Mannn. The rain was gorgeous.
Or else something really really eerie/moody/absolutely intriguing like the Trail of Blood level.

Though I've never created my own FM I'd still tend to agree with the opinion that you should make the kind of FM you want to make.
But if you'd truly to know what type of FM other taffers enjoy; I prefer large, rambling city missions with lots of explorable places, rooftop accesses, secret areas, challenging AI, and a decent plot.
Oh, and no zombies, haunts, ghosts, crayment, treebeasts, or spooky-type characters.
Spiders acceptable.
imperialreign on 28/2/2007 at 22:53
honestly . . . I could never stand them damned spiders - unless you happened upon them without spooking 'em, they were hard to hit, moved too fast, and just a pain; then the jumping spiders . . .

I really enjoy castle missions, or missions with human-built structures (e.g., mansions, villas, fortresses, etc.). I'm not too keen on subterranean or decrepit environments. You could feasibly combine both, though, by putting a dungeon in the basement of a castle, with the dungeon holding a special loot item. ;]
But anyway, I also enjoy highly-intelligent/perceptive AI (though I think they have insurmountable limitations no matter what you do). I prefer human AI to creature AI, though I think adding in a monster or two adds spice to a mission; I really enjoyed the Pagan/Ent combination in one of the T:DS missions.
I enjoy an enthralling plot, but you're handcuffed with only 1 mission at your disposal.
Oh, and I echo the secret area request. Maybe a few! Make an easter egg! And make at least one of them very difficult to find. I love those challenges.
Good luck with the project.
