Is it a real book? I went to my library to get it and they didn't have it! That doesn't happen so often...

The passages seemed like fairly arbitrary pulp crime fiction, I doubt it's real.

Did we ever get a definate yes or no on this? It sounds like an interesting book, but it can only be an interesting book if it actually exists.
I'm betting no. So much was excerpted that they'd have to get special permission from the author. And it has to be reasonably modern, having a sniper rifle and all...

I did a search at the Library of Congress' (
http://www.loc.gov) web site, and came up empty. So I'm guessing it doesn't really exist.

Jacob's Shadow does not exist, except in the game. It was written by Chris Todd. Neither does
Petals of Twilight (written by Harvey Smith), or any of the nonfiction in the game (nanotech info etc.). I'm betting that the book in O's apartment (#12 in Paris) is also made up - it's called
Eye of Argon or something like that and is plainly a Conan the Barbarian takeoff.
See Eberon's interview, here, for proof:

The books that do exist are
The Man Who Was Thursday,
Last and First Men (mentioned in the China Hand bar in Hong Kong), and obviously, the Shakespeare in Nicolette's room.

I was pretty surprised to see the Last and First Men quote... that's some pretty crappy sci-fi (IMHO of course). I know it's pretty old, but the good stuff ages well. I think it must have been inane even when it was first published. They could have picked a better sci-fi work to illustrate JC's role as prototype New Model Human.

When I was playing Deus Ex, and when I came across a book I used to take a screenshot of it. I now have many screenshots of the game and maybe, someday I will make a website dedicated to the game and the screenshots, and you'll be able to read the book. I am planning on doing that for quite some time (not only making a site 4 DX but for some other games I took much Scr.Sht. from). Maybe someday.....

If you want to read all the books (and other printed material) in Deus Ex, just fire up a binary file viewer and look through DeusExText.u in the SYSTEM directory. It's a good way to read all the available bits of Jacob's Shadow more or less in order.
Also, "The Eye of Argon" is the archetypal example of really spectacularly bad fantasy fan writing. If you do a Google search, you'll probably find a number of copies of it scattered across the web. (It should also be noted that the author is much older and wiser now and has publicly apologized on numerous occasions.)

Ayup. I must confess, I've never read "The Eye of Argon" all the way through myself, because I start experiencing wracking stomach pains somewhere around the fifth paragraph. I just did the Google search myself, though, and turned up a rather entertaining page about it at
(
http://public.logica.com/~stepneys/sf/argon.htm) http://public.logica.com/~stepneys/sf/argon.htm which includes things like Babelfish translations through various other languages (just in case it wasn't garbled enough already). Enjoy, and keep a bottle of Pepto-Bismol handy! <IMG SRC="eww.gif" border="0">
