I thought this was a hell of a movie and I can't wait to see it again hopefully in IMAX. I'm completely willing to ignore any plot foibles or cliches which I didn't even notice until I read this thread.
I noticed about an hour or so into the movie I was watching it with my head tilted forward and my mouth wide open. In particular, by the time that Jake and the crew were hoping along the floating mountains connected by enormous roots, I had almost forgot I was watching a movie and just all
It was also probably the first movie that was heavily CGI but didn't bother me because of this.
I just want to see it again!

Just got back from the theater. Definitely incredible special effects, but the plot was paper-thin and so utterly predictable that I found the movie dragging on. There can be only so many scenes of 'check out the wildlife, isn't it cool' before it grows tiresome. More importantly, in ten years I imagine it will not be able to stand on its CGI alone and then all that will be left is Dances With Wolves in space.

AHA! I think I have come up with another comparison: Avatar and Far Cry. Noodle that one a while.

I was reminded of Crysis while watching the film, both in terms of setting and how the tech overshadows the content.

Holy shit I just saw Avatar :D
Edit: in 3D :D

Hmm, maybe if Pandora is one big organism, then the universe is yet another, even larger organism, so Pandora and Earth are part of the same thing, explaining away any similarities between the two. Sounds like as good a BS explanation as any to me!
At least the aliens didn't look like Alien or Predator or have almond shaped eyes. They
always have almond shaped eyes!

I found a funny synopsis (

Oh, and: I saw Avatar twice in 3D and it's awesome :) (I'm a bit considering a third go, which would be then on par with my record of three times The Matrix in the cinema...)

No but it was great :D
My basic review is that it was perfect spectacle entertainment. I agree with most of the criticisms to a point, but while watching the film I was utterly enthralled and after it was over I wanted to run circles in the parking lot while making WHOOOOSH noises.
Except it was ridiculously cold so instead I shuffled to my car and wished the film had been a little less racist.
Gingerbread Man on 5/1/2010 at 22:04
I'm still having a hard time finding the racist stuff... or is it just the "Whites vs Natives" schema in general? Even then it didn't seem particularly noticeable to me. Obviously several of the actors playing Na'vi were black, but that can't be a factor, can it?
What I'm trying to say is that you'd stand a better chance of making a case for Avatar being horribly sexist than racist. Not that I think it was particularly sexist, either. Specist? Aren't all sci-fi movies with aliens involved specist? Is specist a word? >:D
