You know what was a fucking spectacle that no-one talked about?
SPEED RACER that's what. Holy shit was it ever a spectacle.
Except I missed the beginning so I didn't get to hear my favourite line from the trailer: SLOW DOWN SPEED RACER!!
(that's probably also a line from the cartoon, though, eh)

Plenty of people talked about it but, like talking about a retarded child, I think no one did so within earshot of anyone who cared.

I really enjoyed watching that on DVD, shame I didn't go for it in the cinema due to the poor reviews. Probably better with the sound down though.

I would advise to do yourself a favor and not read reviews for movies before you see them, a lot of critics are far removed from the realms of reality and sanity.

I have to say that most of what I've been reading about
Avatar makes me more curious. The footage I've seen on TV didn't interest me all that much, mainly because I thought that the art direction looked pretty kitschy, but by and large people are saying that Cameron still does great, spectacular entertainment.
It's certainly spectacular, and it'll pass the time well enough. But there's also nothing else there besides spectacle; noone will remember the characters or lines a year from now. If the designs actually grate with you, it could wear out its welcome quite easily.

I hate that notion. Obviously not every critic will have exactly your opinion, but that's why you get to know a critic and learn how to take their criticism - just like you judge other people's opinions based on what you know about them and their tastes. It isn't a critic's job to be democratic. It isn't a critic's job to be an average viewer. It's a critic's job to have an intelligent opinion and to express this opinion well -
which is not and shouldn't be the same as telling everyone in the audience whether they're going to like something or not.Obviously there are some crap critics, but just because Joe Bloggs and his five million peers loved
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen doesn't mean that critics should give the film a glowing review. If you think that's their job, then you don't understand what a critic is.

Hah, I thought of that too when I read GBMs "loud, fast, brightly-coloured craziness" comment. Yeah Speed Racer at the cinema, in 3D, might've been something to see. I saw it on TV and... meh.
