Watched it last night.
Seeing cars trying to drive away get swamped by the massive inland tsunami.
Massive fishing trawler boats that are several hundred metres inland.
Buildings getting lifted from their foundations and pushed along with the waters.
An airport submerged.
Disneyland Japan hit by the Tsunami.
 :tsktsk:

More like Japan breezes through earthquake, gets owned hard by tsunami. You can say what you like about the Japanese, but they sure learnt how to build stuff from last time. Now they just need to learn where (not) to build stuff (see: nuclear reactors).
P.S.: According to Wikipedia, the earthquake released an amount of energy equal to 1.41 Exajoules, or about 1600 Nagasaki atomic bombs.

Just imagine what would have happened to the world economy if the quake had hit near Tokyo.
Meanwhile, here in the dumbass state, we've got the Coast Guard looking for a photographer who was swept out to sea when he decided to go to the beach to take pictures of the tsunami waves coming in.

Well, all the destroyed farmland won't make the food prices go down.

Much less impressive by the time it rolled into (
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/inberkeley/detail?entry_id=84866&tsp=1) San Francisco Bay, which has such a narrow mouth I'm surprised it came through even that strong. Lots and lots of damage to boats and harbors along more exposed shores, but the one guy is the only casualty I've heard of so far on this side of the ocean.
Best luck to Japan, and NZ as well. We're so overdue for a massive quake it isn't even funny, so I'm commiserating big time over here.

No damage to San Francisco? Thats unfortunate.
