Also, organic is crock of bull too as far as I can see. It still uses chemicals and pesticides and shit - just different chemicals!

No sir, not so. There is perhaps some way to farm that is not technically "non-organic" like that, but Organic is what it says on the tin. Extra bonus if the tin says biodynamic as well.
I'm beginning to think the reason this sort of farming hasn't caught on east of the Sierras much is because you've already got a bunch of bandwagonning supercorporations who are faux organicking already and everyone figures it's a crock of shit.

I hate the abuse of "natural" as well. Especially when used in conjunction with medicine. "But doctor, I don't want to take pills, I only take natural things. If it's natural it won't have bad side effects."
You know what else is natural? Black mamba poison, that's what, but guess what - it's also deadly.
ffs
If it exists through the normal mechanisms of science as we know it as far as I'm concerned it's natural. Anything "un"natural should be re-designated supernatural.

I have a lot of sympathy for people who don't want to take pills, particularly in the USA where it seems to be a horrible system of doctors receiving kickbacks for particular prescriptions.
I literally cannot imagine taking pills every day that mess with your brain's normal functioning. When you see statistics on how widespread the use of antidepressants and such is, it's fucking terrifying.
Tocky on 19/3/2011 at 04:36
It's really scary when you are on supernatural antidepressants.

Well to your dismay most food today is getting irradiated to kill bacterias.
Eat that!

If you're severely depressed, your brain isn't functioning normally to begin with. By taking antidepressants you can get it closer to functioning normally.
I don't want to dispute that antidepressants are often given for bullshit reasons, but they do have their use for truly depressed people, and they have helped me tremendously.

Oh, but of course. We want to avoid taking things if we don't need to, or taking more than is necessary. I'm a fan of keeping it simple and avoiding polypharmacy, no doubt. But it's this crazy idea that because something was just found in the wild rather than being made in a lab it's inherently safer that gets me, hence the mamba poison hyperbole. It's just one step away from homeopathy.

I don't know if it's common elsewhere, but in Germany, many people like to point out that the pills they take are "plant-based", which supposedly means it's always safe. I usually reply that heroin and cocaine are also plant-based.

Also plant grown are Ricin, Hemlock, and Amatoxin.

I'm not going to argue that its perfect. However, I still eat most of my food (barring lunch, since I have no way to prepare my own lunches) organic. Its just a drastic difference in quality, especially if you buy from shops dedicated to the organic "cause". There's just more care given to the food all around, especially for meat products. Organic animals generally treated much better than ones from sources like IBP or Tyson. It all adds up for a night and day difference. For example, switching to high-end organic ingredients made my Caesar Salad recipe go from something thats was just "ok" to a course that is only beaten by top tier restaurants.
