Hi all, I picked up Deadly Shadows on Thursday and have hardly stopped playing it since, save refilling my wine-glass and sleeping a few hours ;) I look forward to playing the earlier games, especially if this is considered the poorer of the three! However, is it correct that they don't run on Windows XP?

First of all, The Dark Project is a cult classic. You were either there at the time or you werent. While there is still hope, the magic of the Thief series can only be truly observed by playing Thief I first and all the way through, several times. Deadly shadows has very little to do with the original thief "aesthetic" and more to do with a broken action game centered around gloss-like images of what the Thief series "looked" like.
So, abandon Deadly now, and head straight for the glory that is Dark Project.
From the FAQ:
How do I install Thief on Windows 2000 or Windows XP?
Go to Start, then Run, then type d:\setup.exe -lgntforce, where d:\ is your CDrom/DVDrom drive. (note: that's -lgntforce, lowercase "L". If you're unsure, copy and paste it from here.) This problem arises because Win2K and WinXP are based on the NT kernel, which had DirectX support which was flaky at best. Thief needs DirectX to run, so, when the installer sees the NT kernel, it assumes that the game isn't going to be able to run and quits the installation. The -lgntforce switch tells the installer to ignore the NT kernel and install anyway.

Actually, head for the glory that is Thief Gold, if you can find it. The extra missions+polishing are worth the hunt. Deadly Shadows is a good game, but nothing can compare to the original, even today.

Having almost finished Deadly Shadows I picked up the Thief 1 and 2 CD for a fiver yesterday. I'm not having any problems running Dark Project, except that it briefly switches to the desktop whenever I press esc or the map button.

That's due to a difference between the game resolution and the map/menu resolution, iirc.

I disagree with this. T3 takes all of the elements of what made 1+2 great and improved on it signifigantly. Graphics, playability, interaction, challenge, etc. But what makes 1+2 so amazing is even today they don't look or feel 'dated'. All of them equally enjoyable, imho.
p.s. Only one complaint with t3 engine. No more staircrating, flare elevatoring :). Made up for nicely with the climbing gloves, though.
