Jumping is the lazy programmer's mantle. Hard to believe it's the end of 2008 and we still have jumping.
can't mantle over a gap.

Gaps are the lazy level designers way of inflating gameplay. Duh. Mix that in with lazy programmers mantling and you get...well, you get something shitty.

yeah man fuck all that clicking the mouse to shoot things, that's laziness, that shit should be automatic

Spacebar is always for jumping, c is for crouching. e or f are for using, and tab is the map key. Only idiots bind functions to left control.
C for crouching? Instead of L Ctrl? Are you overmedicating? If you keep your hand spread relaxed over the keys, you can have your thumb over Space and your pinkie over Ctrl/Shift. With C you gotta move either your index from D or your thumb from Space. Or concentrate really, really hard, Luke.

My pinkie defaults to shift, not control. Either way, it's a stretch, but I like c for crouch too.

"normal" games - spacebar.
games that lay emphasis on movement / have jump exploits-tricks : mousewheel

Obviously, you move your thumb from space, which, as you generally aren't crouching and jumping at the same time, is optimal. Besides, if you don't have Parkinson's, pressing both c and space at the same time with your thumb is a piece of piss.
Also, as I'm not an orangutan, my pinky has better things to do than moving away from its comfortable position on top of left shift. Bow down to my superior control scheme, monkey boy.

I prefer Left Shift for crouching, the usual WASD for moving around, Space for jumping (because of Half-Life obviously), E for using/activating stuff, q for a best weapon change/last weapon used/switch to fight mode/etc, X for a medkit or a zoom for some obscure rifle that doesn't deserve a Right Mouse Click, Z and C for leaning left and right (if it's possible in the game). Left Control maybe for a walk/run toggle or something, but that's about it. Oh and F for flashlight.:p
A couple of people I know use a different variation of WASD and have ESDF instead. From what they told me it gives them more buttons to work with since now they have more on the left side (W,A,Z,Q,Tab...). I tried that once but I couldn't do the weapon switch because I confused 2 with 1, 3 with 2 and so on. Plus when I moved back from one of those keys I kept putting my fingers WASD style.

So does mine, but I haven't had any problem occasionally moving it 2mm below. The reason I prefer shifting between Shift and Ctrl rather than Space and C is that I find it less likely that I'd need to use Shift and crouch at the same time rather than Space and crouch.

So you'd rather sometimes press both Space and C, others just one of the two, than slightly move your pinkie occasionally. Brilliant logic there, champ. Right up there with your analogies.

Well when you're talking mazes, hugging the right wall is pretty much the guaranteed method of finding the exit.
Hugging the left wall will work just as well too.
Anyway my setup is A, Shift, Z, X for movement with S and Space bar for use. It was defined by the defaults for Terminator: Future Shock which was the first keyboard + mouse FPP game I played and the only one I played for a good while so when other games came along I remapped to that configuration.
