That said, to answer Koki's original post, the space bar = jump thing is a holdover from the good old days of PC gaming. Everything from platformers to FPSes used the space key to jump.
I recall the old school PC FPSes using the space bar for use or am I going crazy?

You're not going crazy. Most games that had jump back then typically used A or sometimes CTRL or ALT for it.

Arrow Keys: Movement
(slide sideways instead of turn whenever available, which nowadays is pretty much always the case)
weapon primary: left click
weapon secondary: Kp Insert (0)
jump: right click
crouch: RCtrl (Toggle On whenever available)
use/interact: Enter
reload: (usually) R
Mouse Y axis: Inverted

Yeah, the space bar was the use key for a lot of FPSes. I recall the ones that didn't need a use key assigning jump to the space bar, or maybe I'm the one going crazy after all.

So a lot of you seem to be using the WASD for playing. I've got used to using the arrow keys, I've tried the WASD a couple times but it just didn't work.
I use the following:
Arrow keys - movement
R Ctrl - crouch (Toggle Off)
R Shift - jump
Enter - Use
Kp 0 - reload
LMB - fire
RMB - alt. fire, scope (or use in Thief, SS or Deus Ex)
Mouse wheel - change weapons
And everything else I need can be mapped on Ins, Del, Home, End, Pg Up, Pg Down or the numerical keys. That way I can't accidently push that Windows key that does the same thing as Alt-Tab.

I use ESDF instead of WASD and spacebar for jump, both are because of Tribes... in T1 you had to ski by constantly pressing jump, and I couldn't imagine constantly tapping ALT or something while moving and firing. ESDF gives you a lot more keys within easy reach, which again is important for Tribes but I keep it in other games because otherwise I get my number keys mixed up and hit 2 when I mean 3, for example. Shift is always sprint and Ctrl is crouch, toggled if possible. Use is always Mouse 4 (thumb button). R is reload, Q is medkit, A is zoom (held)

I used RDFG for kmod 3 beta because S is hard bound to spellbook for some utterly retarded reason. You think that maybe using that or ESDF might be better because you get more keys to choose from but it's really just confusing and even Hidden and Dangerous 2 didn't have enough keys to make it worthwhile.
Using the arrowkeys would be frustrating for me now because they're on the wrong side of the keyboard, unless you use a mouse with your left hand and, despite being left handed, I don't. I suppose you could move your keyboard to the left some but for that you'd either need a really big desk or one that isn't completely filled with clutter.

What the hell is kmod? All I get are lesbian nurses when I google it.
Not that I'm strictly complaining mind you.

For me, after so long gaming with so many different defaults, I feel like I've become essentially ambidextrous when it comes to controls and can slide between WASD or arrows, and jump as Cntl or Spacebar or LMB or A ... for FPSs, emulators, platforms... It's like my fingers hardly care anymore, as long as the bindings are reasonable and have been done before (not something totally out of the blue).
@dethtoll - I learned about myself today that if you tempt me with a video about (1) an accident involving masturbating with glass vs. (2) lesbian nurses ... I will never click for (1) if you tempted me a million times, but count the nanoseconds I click for (2).
