DS is weird. I can't decide whether or not I absolutely hate it, want to break the cd, and kill someone, or if I love it. Definitely an odd gaming experience.
I'm just about to go to the pagan mission to finish the stuff for the keeprs
Does the game get better after this?
Also: I had no idea how funny this engine is. I set it to 1024/768 with all settings turned off and it lags like hell. Then I put it at 800/600 with all settings max and no lag at all!
I think my only real complaint is that DS looks sorta cartoon-ish to me. Anyone else feel the same?

Yeah I like that ;)
Force yourself to play the whole game..with every mission it gets better...

The game as a whole, is just alright. The cartoonish look didn't suit the atmosphere and tone of the series. Why it was approved, I can't fathom. It definately needed more time in the cooker before being released and it was definately labotomized to a degree to appeal to a wider range of players. It isn't quite Thief, but it's still fun to play. :)

I'm working on a mod to make it more realistic. Speculars were hardly used & the normal maps were blocky due to the dxt compression so that's one phase of the mod. Here's my quote from the fm forum:

After experimenting with the t3 editor I think a lot the components of the t3 engine(s) were not taken advantage of:
Graphically:
* Specular and environment maps were hardly used (it could've been so much more at all levels)
* Higher resolution textures (no prob w/John P's hi-res textures)
* The models could have higher poly counts (less angular & square) just a little bit more would've done a lot.
* AI models look too much like cartoons (big heads, eyes, hands).
* The videos definately could've been a lot better
* The UI should've been more consistant with the first 2 games
* More steam punk objects (there's a few models floating around of collectors & classic lights).
Sound:
I thought the sound was the best part. Eric Brosius is a genius but the some of the classic sounds should have stayed.
Engine:
* I'm sure Havok physics has the capability of swimmable water but the editing community does not have access. With some clever scripting/linking we could create a facsimile of swimmable water. After several experiments this has not happened yet.
* Flesh could've been optimized. Hell, implement antiportals so we can have t2 sized missions!
Gameplay:
* Inventory items! There's plenty of tutorials the editing community has done to restore some of those.
* Smarter AI
The graphics can be taken advantage of (I'm currently working on a Realist mod which won't be out for . . . well . . . a loooooong time :p ).
The gameplay elements are in place as some of you have seen in various fms so far. Except for the smarter AI (although we can make them more aware).
Sounds and other UI stuff has already happened with New Horizon's Minimalist Mod.
For those critics out there:
Yes, the editor's been out for 7+ months & there's not much to show for it BUT we've learned a lot & I'm sure there's a lot more to learn. All of this stuff takes time so have a little patience or I'll hunt you down & kick you in the butt!
Here's some screenshots of some of the texture work so far:

My main gripe is the drab and depressing colouring, which gives the whole thing a gloomy look. This spills over into the FMs as well. Everything is usually a sludgy khaki, or in the case of the undead missions, dreary grey-green or grey-blue. It would be great if someone could work out a way to brighten things up a bit here and there.
(When playing The Cradle I used to nip down to the incinerator from time to time just to see a cheerful blaze!) :D

Cheerful is not Thief . . . If you want you can do a Teletubby Thief mod :joke:

Cheerful is not Thief . . .
Not entirely true - many of the larger houses in T1 and T2 are well furnished, colourful and brightly lit. Some of the FMs have really cheerful scenes. It's only T3 that never makes it.

Hmm, I personally loved the graphics. The atmosphere seemed more realistic to me and I liked how the guards and such moved their lips when they talked. I love the position the bodies fall in, including Garrets. I fell off a balcony onto a bookshelf once, it was kinda funny. I was laying dead on the bookshelf with an arm and leg hanging over the side, very realistic.

I think things are quite colourful and contrast in TDS. It's just that mostly used colours for lighting were blue and yellow (good combo BTW), red colour was very rarely used. Also, bloom can considerably degrade constrast if you use it.
