Just finished Thief 2... - by Spaztick

I'm an avid gamer, have been for 12 years, and I have to honestly admit the Thief series is one of the best games I've ever played, and I just had to praise LGS for their work, they designed a revolutionary product. I wasn't around during release so I'm not sure how big or how hyped it might have been, but if it wasn't big during initial release a lot of people missed out on something great.
The final missions (and the twist in Trail of Blood level) were well done and stood out the most, and fit the "sneaky thief" persona well while at the same time delivering that epic confrontation at the end.
On to T:DS!
*small spoiler*
(BTW, is it possible to enter Karras' room on the final level?)

I see.
Thief II had very little hype and fizzled out along with LGS, my friend. It was a pretty fair forgery. Please don't play Deadly. I recommend you go back and start over with the original, The Dark Project. Then play Thief II again with the new experience. Thief III changes things that only a true sheep would accept.
:)

Starting to play Thief 2, so far it's been a better experience then DP, specially regarding mission design although it looses a bit of the charm and atmosphere the first one had. Thief 3 recovered that though and despite the changes it's a good game. Although I started Thief with the third one so I guess I'm not "cool".

Hah, I played Thief I, I thought it was good, they both compare well to each other, but I place Thief II slightly ahead of DP (if only for level design, but that's very opinion-based).
Based on feedback it doesn't sound like TDS is a "bad" game, although it had to try to live up to the previous two. Can't comment yet though, haven't really played through DS.
Shame to hear it kind of fizzled with LGS, guess people threw it onto the pile along with Ico and Suikoden. :(

Despite Goldmoon's comments, Thief III is NOT a bad game. Far from it. It was simply a rushed game that could have spent more time in development (and some serious changes at the beginning of development, but the story behind all that is too long to bother quoting here). It has some serious issues, and overall is a step back from the two previous games in the series. But at the same time if you stop trying to compare it to the near-perfection that was Thief 1 and 2, you'll find it's still a really fun game. Some of the parts in it (especially one level in particular) are very well done. Plus, you have to play it to know how the story ends.

You should try playing some of the fantastic Fan Missions that have been made for Thief. There are tons of them and a lot of them are easily as good, if not better, than the original games. You can find all the info you need on where to download them and how to run them in the (

Thief appeared in late 1998 and was a major hit, eventually making millions of dollars for Looking Glass. Had Thief not been a big hit, Looking Glass would almost certainly have folded. Instead, Thief appeared to revitalize the company. Thief Gold sold well, and System Shock II sales were passable. Thief II is currently on the way to being an even bigger hit than Thief I.

The tendency is to think that the games only captured a niche market and that that was why LGS failed; but while the games weren't blockbusters by a long shot they did sell pretty well by the standards of the industry. From what I hear, Thief: Deadly Shadows tanked in terms of sales, but I don't have any sources for that.

I would not call Thief I & II perfect or even near-prefect, cus they're not, far from it in fact. The actual merit of T1 and 2 is that they are innovative and quite atmospheric, do what they set out to do well, and are in general able to force users to overlook their flaws by virtue of their strengths.
While T3 is also a good game and a noteworthy addition, it's remembered by its flaws most of all and at the same time not given fair summary for its strengths as well as the challenges the makers took upon themselves. So it's ironic when I see that the word sheep used by a staunch conservative to describe his opposite. Whether you consider it a success, a failure, or anywhere in between, the so-called sheep is the guy who is ostensibly sticking to the old guns despite knowing that things can not possibly stay the same.
Anyway this is getting real old.

It may be getting old, but it never gets old to have new players join the party, and discover Thief. Welcome.
