Yep, I finally finished the game after all these years. :p
I remember starting it when the game was brand new, but apparently I didn't like the first mission and I found running around the city quite boring, so I didn't touch it again for years.
However, I picked Deadly Shadows from my games shelf again a few weeks ago, cleared the dust from the DVD case, and installed the game. The short tutorial section and the first mission were still as boring as I remembered, and the movement system felt awkward, so I nearly gave up again.
But I'm glad that I didn't - after the first few missions I was already hooked, the game was actually quite fun to play, and the story got so interesting that I couldn't stop playing it.
I haven't played any modern FPS games since my computer is getting a bit too old to run them, but I thought that Deadly Shadows looked fantastic. I had heard a lot of complaints about the game physics, but I think it worked quite well. I found it quite fun to throw unconscious bodies down the stairs. :ebil: The movement system felt a bit awkward at first, but I got used to it soon enough so I didn't really bother me, even though I still managed to get stuck in some places. The loading zones didn't bother me either.
Some of the new tools in Deadly Shadows were quite fun, but unfortunately quite useless. The oil flasks for example were fun to use, the guards looked hilarious as they fell off a bridge to the water, but I only used them a couple of times during the whole game. The climbing gloves were OK, although they were a bit clumsy to use and weren't nearly as good as good old rope arrows. I also didn't find that many hidden secrets in the game, which was a bit disappointing as I always search for every wall and bookcase for hidden buttons or something. :D
Hmm... What else... Well, the AI was still as dumb as ever, unfortunately. When a guard spotted me I could just run to the only dark corner of the room, and the guard would hardly ever find me. Sometimes it felt a bit silly to just wait for the guards to give up and then - BAM! - blackjack them. But that's always been the "problem" in the Thief games... maybe that's what makes them so fun, I don't know.
Most of the missions in the game were well-designed and fun. The Cradle was a bit of a disappointment though as everyone had been raving about it, and even though the atmosphere was great there was just too much pointless running around the same places. But of course it was a good mission as well.
All in all, I thought that Deadly Shadows was an excellent game. It was surprisingly long too, it must have taken around 20 hours from me to finish the game which is pretty much. It's probably not as good as Thief 1 or Thief 2, but it's certainly not as bad as some people say either. It's quite difficult to compare those games anyway...
I haven't followed the gaming news for a long time, so could someone tell me if there are any plans or rumours for another possible sequel for the Thief series? :)

Sequel is the Dark mod, closest thing we'll get to a sequel.

Is that your own personal opinion, or has Eidos (or whoever owns the rights now) actually confirmed that a sequel is unlikely? :o

I know I'm going to sound like a jerk, but there have been many threads and posts in other threads about this. There's even a (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107696) stickied thread about this. Lots of rumors, a hell of a lot of wishful-thinking, and nothing official to say that it will happen.
I don't think a week goes by without it being brought up on TTLG or the EIDOS forums. It's been asked about since before TDS was released.:)
Oops, you're not sounding like a jerk at all, haha, I knew that someone must have asked it before but I guess I should have at least checked out the stickied threads first.
But at least I wrote a rather long review of Deadly Shadows as well which justifies the existance of this thread. :p

Your question has been asked a lot, like jtr7 has said. In other various threads, people have said, the dark mod is what T3 should of been. If you haven't played the Alpha demo, play it. Worth the play time.

I assume that you're not a big fan of T3 then?
But thanks, I'll probably check out the Alpha demo some time soon... :) I didn't even know that such demo has already been released, so I'm gonna have to buy Doom3 first.

No rope arrow, no water to swim in. The Dark mod, there are rope arrows, there is water. I don't really care who likes it, and who doesn't. Bashing of it anyway is stupid and retarded, you like? Great. We all have our personal likes and dislikes, T3 really wasn't for me. Some people do like, you like it, thats great. More power to ya!! Don't get me wrong, there were some aspects I did enjoy, just not enough.
Someday do check out the demo, remember, its only an Alpha release, still work to be done. What they have done is hella good. They should be proud. We're lucky to have such dedicated taffers.

So let's hope they don't sacrifice everything else for rope arrows and water. From what one can read in the discussions people seem to be focused on it a little I guess.
@Tomi, quite reasonable evaluation. The AI is indeed more deaf and blind but more intelligent in its reactions. It is one of my plans to look into this issue if I have the time...
