Personally, I have liked Thief 3 best. I played that first, and then got Thief 1 and 2 and played them, and I kept thinking about how they didn't compare to Thief 3. I have played Thief 3 all the way through 3 times and another time up to the Cradle (I love to hate that level (: ). One thing that I hated about the old Thief games was that if you were discovered, it often just meant a reload. Personally, I enjoy the more forgiving nature of Thief 3. And of course the graphics are superior in Thief 3, which is to be expected since it is a newer game run on more powerful machines.
One tip that I have discovered for the Cradle. I like to kill all those patients (in most levels I try to avoid killing people because I like the extra challenge), however it usually takes several shots to kill them, and they move so fast it is easy to get into trouble before they are dead. I have found that fire arrow and then a flash bomb stuns them (and hurts). Then while stunned, it is easy to shoot another fire arrow for the killing blow. Once I had that tactic down, it made them less threatening.
Btw, there are some hidden areas of interest in Thief 3. In South Quarter, there is a way to get into the rooftop area that takes you to a room that has some free flashbombs. There is also a way to get into the grate above the "tunnel" that leads to Stone Market. In Old Quarter, there is a place that Garrett refers to as the Thieves' highway. Pretty extensive, although no loot to be gained there.
One thing that I didn't like about rope arrows was that you had a limited supply of them. The only way to extensively search for hidden areas in Thief 1/2 was to constantly reload to protect your supply. With climbing gloves you can search to your heart's content.

Well, neither of those reasons make TDS a better game than the originals, it just means you have to work harder at being a better player. ;) The originals are highly praised for a reason, you actually have to learn how to be a sneak. In TDS, you can run around like a mad man and still win. It defeats the whole point of what Thief was supposed to be about. The original games encouraged stealth through minor penalties. Some of them were extremely subtle.
In Thief 1 and 2 for example. When you take out a 'harmful' weapon, you'll notice that your light gem 'slightly' lights up...just a tiny bit, but if you take out your black jack, it stays dark...thus encouraging stealth over force. TDS didn't do this. Ion Storm decided to strip out those subtle encouragements in favor of more easily encouraging brute force. The only weapon that affects your light gem is the obvious one, the fire arrow. There are few rewards for stealth and fewer penalties for being a murderer.
My suggestion for Thief 1 and 2 is to try harder, and you'll see how the game can truly be experienced if you're patient.

I'm pretty sure you're not in TDS, but maybe I'm wrong.

I used to like TDS when it was released, but now, after I returned to T1/2 FMs, and when I remember its ultra-tiny maps, movement model, horribly looking interface, Unreal Engine's trademark crappy looking gigantic low poly items (that supposed to be really small), low detail architecture, as well as many small things that make TDS look like cartoon, I have absolutely zero desire to replay it, or play FMs for it.
I would say Unreal Engine killed TDS. As well as it killed Deus Ex 2 and more recently - Bioshock.

To be honest, even a video of Rutherford Castle on YouTube spreads enough atmosphere for me that I want to play it soon if I can. Same goes for the older games, but with TDS it is most remarkable.

For me personally, save and reload constantly breaks the immersion of the game. It doesn't make me a better player. I personally think the penalty in Thief 3 is in some ways worse. If you get discovered and just reload in Thief 1/2, you waste the amount of time between saves (which isn't much if you know you are going to attempt something risky and save before). In Thief 3 if you aren't saving every step, then you have to run and hide and wait until the guards give up, and even then they tend to be more alert.
I do agree that the light gem was too forgiving in Thief 3. I wouldn't have been opposed to making it more difficult to find total blackness. I also like the idea of equipping weapons making you more visible, although to be honest, I don't know why wielding a knife over a blackjack would make you more visible.
P.S. One more thing about Thief 3. You can make the game as hard as you like. If you want to go around killing everyone and running from room to room ignoring the guards, you can play that way. If you want to try and avoid being seen the entire time, you can play that way as well.

....and you completely missed my point. :) By becoming better at playing the originals, you won't have to save and reload. I certainly didn't mean saving and reloading makes you better.

... and you completely missed his point :), which is that T3 allows him to become a better player without breaking immersion by saving and reloading all the time.

However, New Horizon was right about the lightgem. I just tried it with different weapons and also moving around with them and there appears to be no difference. I wonder if one was able to add scripts for that, though.
