Well I finally took the time to barrow a copy of Deus Ex from a friend. So far I have found the game fairly interesting though I am a bit let down by several things. Being a hardcore Thief player I liked the idea of being a secret agent in a modern world with Thief-like controls so those where nothing new to me. I have noticed the game is slightly more realistic then Thief on several levels such as damage allocating, NPC interaction, and the like. I wasn't expecting it to be so thievish though as to actually be sneaking around and picking of or avoiding my opponents though. The training mission really caught me off guard because the guards which are patrolling always seemed to spot me, and being a Thief player I was kind of embarrassed. Deus should really come with some sort of a detector that tells you how well lit the area is. So far I have only on the first mission and I am somewhat confused about my order, if someone would be so kind as to give me a hand. Why do the terrorists know who I am? For all they know maybe I'm just some guy walking in the street, this seems a mite unrealistic to me. Are there levels where I am supposed to sneak in and act like an actual agent and not a Quake space marine?

Take a look at your "Goals/Notes" menu, that should tell you what to do. And listen to what Paul told you (you can read the conversation in your "Conversations" menu, oddly enough). As for how to act, that's largely up to you, which is one of the cool things about the game :) Sneaking is NOT very Thief-like however, you really need to focus less on shadows and more on staying out of the enemies' line of sight. Plus, you're a trained killer, don't be afraid to cap some ass if the situation calls for it.
The game can take some getting used to, especially for someone who's been playing a lot of Thief. Just remember, DX is NOT Thief and it never claimed to BE Thief. You'll have a blast :)
Oh, and the Terrorists no that you're not a civilian for good reason. Remember where you're currently located (hint: Liberty Island is a bit different in the future)

JC Denton can't really hide in the shadows like Garrett, but as Monkeysee indicates, they can't see you if they're dead! :)
One of the things people talk about for DX2 is the desire to be able to completely sneak thru a level more easily, i.e. take the non-violent approach. For all its choices, Deus Ex is still an FPS--with the "S" still standing for "shooter", not "sneaker"...

just getting deus ex....ah, brings back memories....
remember, it's okay to go quake on one mission and to sneak on others. you're trained for it and the enemies are by far no match for you. plus, sneaking around all the time will ensure you have enough ammo for those quake moments. remember in thief when you just kept getting discovered by that one guard, so you got your health potions ready and went to battle like william wallce? you can do that in deus ex.
if you're ever in doubt, remember one thing: follow your instincts. if you feel like shooting that guy would be a good idea, stealing from that guard house would be very beneficial (if a bit risky), or skipping that objective would make things a lot easier, go for it. deus ex is such a great game that you can't mess up unless you die. remember that.

I have been doing alot of playing last night. Got all the way to the level with the mole people in the subway. I have noticed that the game is built diffrently then Thief is. I can actually talk to people, I can also skip objectives that I dont like (some of them). Though the actual gameplay isent as fun as Thief was, in that actually going into a certain installation and doing it without killing anyone is to hard to try. Some gameplay hints would be nice.

gameplay hints...hmmm...don't die?
since deus ex can be played however you wan't, we can tell you what to do next, but not how to do it, y'know? deus ex, while it my give you the illusion it's not, is very linear. there are a few "forced failures" and places where they don't give you the choice to do whatever, so it's hard to get stuck. probably the only time you'll be stymied is when you can't find a code of password to do something.
believe it or not, i actually got through the whole mole people mission without setting off alarms. yes, that includes
Spoiler:
the airport and lebedev's private terminal.

pretty cool, huh?
also, earlier you said in the training the guys were shooting you. do you mean liberty island? there is an actual tutorial. it can help you get the gist of it.

Yeah, lighting has little to do with the stealth element in Deus Ex. If you're going to be sneaky, hide behind boxes or other objects to hide from the enemies view. This game can be more action oriented then Thief, but it's certainly not a Quake. The game's unique feature is it's non-linearity. If you play through that first mission again, I can guarantee you'd fight another way to complete it. If you look harder, you could probably find several different ways to do it. In fact, there are multiple ways to do almost everything in the game (opening doors, infiltrating bases, completing objectives). I first realized this when I re-did the first mission and realized just how many ways there were to get into that terrorist base. I guess if you hadn't caught onto that yet Deus Ex would seem pretty dry. Just remember, for the most part, you're able to do whatever the heck you want. That's the game's main "gimmick". It's focus isn't on being a stealth game unless that's what you want it to be.

You guys were right it is very linear even though it gives you the illusion that it's not. I noticed some NPC's will respond to you differently, such as when I didn't kill the terrorist leader guy on the 747. After I got chewed out I went back and killed him. The game is fun but its no Thief. For some reason there is just a certain feel to Thief that I like. Another thing about Deus Ex is the conspiracy theories. I think its interesting that someone made a game according to popular 'world wide government" conspiracy.
