Just got Deus Ex:head shot and Realistic question. - by SubJeff

Just got Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition (is it patched up or are there extra patches out?).
Anyways, playing on Realistic 1st time through (a habit of mine to play every game on the highest difficulty from day 1 - makes 'em harder and last longer) and being killed with shots to my head.
Tough. Nice.
But the 10mm pistol I have doesn't kill NSF with a single headshot. Or at least it doesn't seem to. Am I a bad shot? The sniper rifle takes them out in one (a sugar sweet weapon).
I'm tempted to use the knife at close quarters inside the statue. Is the aiming spot on or is there a degree of randomness even when the target has honed in tight? (I'm sure you know what I mean).
Lastly, laser sights? Any point considering I already have a targetting recepticle?

Yes, you are a bad shot. The higher your pistol skill gets, the more damage you do per shot. Also, if you've ever played Rainbow Six, you'll note a similarity in the way that the targeting reticle works, namely the four sliders that determine how "accurate" a shot is going to be. If you wait a while, the sliders will go down a fair bit, and the bullet will appear anywhere within the edges of the sliders. Generally speaking, if you fit the head of an NSF agent fully inside of those sliders (and even sticking out a bit) you'll stand a much better chance of getting a lethal headshot. Even with the 10mm, a headshot should take out a normal NSF agent when they are caught unaware (meaning, usually, that you're aiming at the back of their heads). If they're aware, they don't take as much damage, I believe. I've always rationalized it as that they are actively trying to evade the gunfire, and even if they fail to completely avoid the bullet, they might be able to minimize the lethality of the shot. Also, they are wearing headgear, which you are not. It's entirely possible that there is a thin layer of kevlar and padding in those hoods, whereas as JC, all you have are your shades.
For hand to hand, you're probably better off with the crowbar than the knife, but that's speculation. The best is probably the shock prod, since if you catch someone unaware and aim for the small of the back (I think that's the right spot) they go down with just one shot. I've always used non-lethal methods myself (the baton) which aren't as quick and efficient, but somewhat more satisfying (but then, I wasn't playing on realistic at the time. Ouch.)
As for the laser sight bit, I'm not certain. If you really want to make the game "realistic", you should go to options and turn it off. That way, laser sights become much, much more useful in the game. Otherwise, I'm not certain. From the description, it would seem that they make the gun more accurate when used, but I've not noticed my aim improving any with them.
For the record, normal darts from the minicrossbow are quite excellent at close-range "sniping". Headshots with these are really nasty.

The laser sight is very useful because as I recall, when you have it installed in a weapon and turned on, the bullet will always hit where the laser dot is, with no need to wait for your aim to tighten. However, if you install it on a weapon that also has a scope installed, it doesn't seem to do anything at all.

Wow, SDM! If that is true then the laser sight is fantastic. Can anyone verify that?
By "honed in tight" I meant that the sliders are in as far as they go Hotfoot. I'll be sure to remember to keep the heads in the box.
I'm going to test the knife and crowbar on an alerted enemy. The knife looks good at least. And I already found that out about the darts.
I do have one more Q though - tranquiliser darts; they eventually take the enemy down but does a head shot quicken their action as they are too damn slow, especially with multiple enemies?

It's about time you got DX!
I forgot how, exactly, but the information for the weapons tells how much damage each weapon does.

That's a definite "Yes". On master pistol skill, a tranq headshot will take down an NSF grunt instantly. All the human and not-quite-so-human NPCs have location-based damage. A headshot is always more effective, except in the case of the baton and prod. With those, as already noted, the small of the back is the place to hit.

As for melee weapons, I'd suggest taking at least some skill in Low-Tech before you get serious about it. Not only does it increase the measly 5/6/7 damage for the knife/crowbar/baton respectively, but it increases rate of attack as well, which comes in handy. Even though the baton does more damage, I don't like using it for some reason. I takes a hell of a lot of time to get out, put away and it seems to take the longest to swing. That means if you don't get the guy right away, chances are he's gonna have time to at turn around. The crowbar is faster than the baton and to me the knife is faster than the crowbar. With Master Low-Tech you can do 7.5 damage with a knife, which is actually a great deal of damage when directed to the cranium.
If you plan to take Low-Tech on through, there's a tool that most people overlook: flares. Yes, the light is more useful, but flares distract grunts. Near the top of the statue, there are two groups of two soldiers standing pretty close to each other making it a a difficult task for a Low-Tech guy. Toss a flare in front of them. You'll be surprised how effective it is for distraction.

And this stealth gun does crappy damage! I hate the way I can't aim well when moving - the target goes to max. I know it's realistic to some extent but pistol shooting!
I want to train in stealth. I'm a Thief player, what do you expect!
I'm going for sniper rifle, close range silent kills with melee weapons and pistols with extra armour and strength/melee combat skills. I also want to hack and be good with electronics. A silent assasin.
This game is shaping up well. Love the RPG element - guess I have to upgrade skills to become what I really want. The 2nd level has a pretty poor design IMHO. Is it based on a real place like level 1?
One thing I'm loving is the number of choices you have - what to pick, what to use the multitool on, what to hunt for codes for. Great replay value.
The other thing is the choices you make. Acting like the nice guy I am I've got some help from civies. Nice touch.
Oh a Q - should be in hints but what the heck -

Spoiler:
why can't I use Manderly's username and password to log in to the comps on the interim level between mission 1 and 2? I thought I'd get some nice info. Can you use Gunthers? I never bothered trying.

Stealth pistols do crap damage for a reason man: they're stealth. Just remember that you can't silence a regular pistol, so it's got to be one or the other. With around advanced pistols, you can take down most people if you aim slowly.
Level 2...are you talking about Battery Park? It is a real place actually. You can see a pic of it here.
There's just one thing I can't figure out when you're helping civilians.

Spoiler:
The chick in Battery Park standing next to the burning barrel...she asks for five credits and if you don't give it to her she runs away and is marked hostile by you IFF. Odd.

And as for you last question...

Spoiler:
You can only access Manderley's account on his computer, not anyone elses. It's a while since I played, but I'm pretty sure you can access all the accounts from Alex's computer. It helps to give JC's tired little legs a rest after all the running around.
